DRI Ludhiana Makes Major Drug Bust, Seizes 4.6 Kg Heroin Worth Rs 9.2 Crore
In a significant crackdown on narcotics trafficking, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Zonal Unit, Ludhiana, has successfully intercepted a large consignment of heroin and arrested two individuals involved in the illicit trade. The operation, which unfolded on the outskirts of Ludhiana, resulted in the recovery of 4.595 kilograms of heroin, with an estimated market value of approximately Rs 9.2 crore.
Intelligence-Led Surveillance Leads to Interception
Acting on specific intelligence regarding the transportation of narcotic drugs from border districts to Ludhiana, officers from the DRI Ludhiana Zonal Unit mounted a surveillance operation along the Jalandhar–Ludhiana highway. The team was tracking a suspected vehicle believed to be carrying the contraband.
At around 4 pm on March 14, the officers sighted and intercepted the targeted vehicle on the highway outskirts. This proactive move was based on precise information, highlighting the DRI's commitment to combating drug trafficking through strategic operations.
Recovery and Seizure of Contraband
Upon rummaging the intercepted vehicle, DRI officials discovered four transparent packets wrapped in yellow and black tape. These packets were concealed inside a yellow-coloured polyethylene bag with black markings, strategically placed on the floor of the front passenger seat to avoid detection.
The recovered substance was immediately tested using a field testing kit, which confirmed it to be heroin. The total weight of the four packets was precisely measured at 4.595 kg. In addition to the narcotics, the vehicle used for trafficking was also seized under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Arrests and Legal Action
Following the seizure, the two individuals travelling in the vehicle and carrying the contraband were arrested on March 15. They have been charged under the NDPS Act, which imposes strict penalties for drug-related offenses. The DRI officials emphasized that this bust is part of ongoing efforts to dismantle drug networks operating in the region.
The estimated illicit market value of the seized heroin underscores the scale of this operation, which aims to curb the flow of narcotics and protect public health. The DRI has reiterated its vigilance in monitoring and intercepting such illegal activities to maintain law and order.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the persistent challenges in combating drug trafficking, with authorities urging public cooperation to report suspicious activities.
