Delhi Businessman Gunned Down in Suspected Extortion-Related Murder
In a shocking incident that has sent ripples through the capital, a real estate businessman was brutally murdered by unidentified assailants in southwest Delhi's Chhawla area on Friday afternoon. The attackers, who executed the killing with chilling precision, managed to flee the scene immediately after the shooting, leaving behind a trail of evidence and unanswered questions.
Extortion Attempt Gone Wrong
According to police sources familiar with the investigation, the murder appears to be the direct fallout of a failed extortion attempt. While official confirmation is still pending, investigators are strongly considering the involvement of UK-based gangster Kapil Sangwan in this heinous crime. Sangwan had reportedly threatened the victim, identified as Balwan Gehlot, demanding a staggering Rs 2 crore as "protection money" in recent communications.
If this connection is verified, it would represent the second extortion-related killing in Delhi within just one month. In February, businessman Vaibhav Gandhi was tragically killed by shooters affiliated with the notorious Lawrence Bishnoi gang in the Bawana area. Notably, Sangwan is known to be in alliance with Lawrence Bishnoi, adding another layer of complexity to this criminal network.
The Chilling Execution
The sequence of events unfolded around 1 PM when police received a PCR call from a concerned passerby who heard gunshots and noticed a suspicious vehicle in an agricultural farm. Upon arrival, officers discovered that attackers on a motorcycle had intercepted Gehlot's car and shot him at point-blank range, leaving him with virtually no chance of escape or survival.
"The attackers found their target alone in his car and executed the shooting with ruthless efficiency. Our investigation has revealed that a gangster operating from abroad had recently issued threats to the victim. We are pursuing all angles vigorously," stated a senior police officer involved in the case.
The critically injured businessman was rushed to a nearby hospital, but doctors declared him dead upon arrival, confirming the fatal nature of the attack.
Police Investigation Intensifies
Law enforcement agencies have launched a comprehensive investigation into this brazen daylight murder. Multiple specialized teams have been formed to track down the perpetrators, with investigators meticulously scanning CCTV footage from the vicinity to identify both the shooters and the vehicle used in their getaway.

The Notorious Kapil Sangwan
Kapil Sangwan, who hails from Najafgarh and previously lived in Nanda Enclave with his family, has emerged as a central figure in this investigation. After dropping out of a hotel management course at a private college in Gurgaon, Sangwan turned to a life of crime, eventually fleeing to the United Kingdom in 2020 using forged documents.
His criminal resume includes multiple cases of extortion, contract killings, and gang wars. Sangwan has recently become active again after lying low for several months last year. In response to requests from Indian law enforcement agencies, Interpol has issued a Red Corner notice against him, highlighting the international dimension of his criminal activities.
The gangster's family connections to crime run deep—his brother, Jyoti, is also a known gangster currently lodged in Tihar Jail. Sangwan maintains a longstanding rivalry with gangster Manjeet Mahal, dating back to 2015 when Mahal was responsible for killing Sangwan's brother-in-law. Together, the Sangwan siblings have been implicated in a series of murders over the past decade.
In a disturbing development that underscores the ongoing threat, sources indicate that Sangwan threatened another businessman in the trans-Yamuna area on the very same Friday as the Chhawla murder, suggesting his criminal operations continue unabated despite international attention.
