A head constable from Coimbatore has been suspended from duty following serious allegations of molesting a young law student aboard a moving train. The incident has sparked outrage and led to immediate police action.
The Incident on the Intercity Train
The alleged molestation took place on Saturday, December 20. The accused, identified as Head Constable Sheik Mohammed attached to the RS Puram police station in Coimbatore, was returning from Chennai after completing a bandobast duty. He was travelling in an unreserved compartment of the Chennai-Coimbatore intercity train.
Seated next to him was a 23-year-old student from a law college. According to official sources, when the train was moving near the Katpadi area, Sheik Mohammed allegedly misbehaved with the young woman by inappropriately touching her.
Student's Presence of Mind and Police Action
Displaying remarkable courage and presence of mind, the college girl managed to record the incident on her mobile phone. She immediately informed the Government Railway Police (GRP) about the harassment.
Acting swiftly on her complaint, the GRP personnel removed the police constable from the train at Arakkonam railway station for interrogation. Following the preliminary inquiry, the Katpadi Government Railway Police registered a formal case against Sheik Mohammed for molesting the college student.
Suspension and Ongoing Investigation
The departmental response was prompt. City Deputy Commissioner of Police G. Karthikeyan subsequently placed the head constable under suspension pending a full investigation. This action underscores a zero-tolerance policy towards misconduct by personnel in uniform.
A thorough investigation into the matter is currently underway. The case highlights the critical importance of accountability within the police force and the bravery of victims who come forward to report such crimes.
