A devastating road accident in the early hours of Saturday claimed the lives of two teenagers in Chennai, casting a pall of grief over the Parivakkam locality. The fatal collision involved a motorcycle and a lorry on the busy Poonamallee Bypass Road.

Details of the Tragic Collision

The incident occurred around 3:30 am on Saturday near a vehicle showroom on Poonamallee Bypass Road. According to police reports, the two victims, P Nirmal, 19, and S Santhosh, 16, were out on a motorcycle for refreshments. A lorry, loaded with chickens and travelling from Nagari towards Royapettah, suddenly took a left turn, ramming into their two-wheeler with tremendous force.

The impact was severe enough to throw both young men off the bike. Police investigation revealed that Nirmal, who was riding the motorcycle, was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Both teenagers sustained critical head and abdominal injuries in the accident.

Victims and Immediate Aftermath

The deceased were identified as residents of Parivakkam. P Nirmal was a second-year B.Com student, while his friend S Santhosh, 16, worked as a load man at a vegetable market in Avadi. After the collision, they were rushed to Sri Ramachandra Hospital in Porur for emergency treatment. Tragically, doctors at the hospital declared them brought dead upon arrival.

Investigation and Arrest

The Poonamallee Traffic Investigation Wing swiftly moved into action, collecting crucial evidence from the scene. Examination of CCTV footage from the area confirmed negligence on the part of the lorry driver. Based on the evidence, the police arrested the lorry driver, 31-year-old A Nisar Ahmed.

He has been charged under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, specifically:

  • Section 106 for causing death by negligence.
  • Section 281 for rash driving.

The police have stated that a further investigation is currently underway to ascertain all factors leading to the tragic event.

This heartbreaking incident has once again highlighted the perils of negligent driving on Chennai's roads, especially during late-night hours, snatching away young lives full of promise.
