Three Individuals Apprehended for Gold Chain Robbery Targeting Senior Citizen in Chennai
In a swift police operation, three people have been taken into custody for allegedly snatching a gold chain from a 63-year-old woman in the West Mambalam area of Chennai. The incident, which occurred on March 14, involved a brazen daylight robbery that left the elderly victim shaken.
Details of the Snatching Incident
The victim, identified as Tamizhselvi, aged 63 and a resident of West Mambalam, was returning home when the crime took place. According to police reports, she had just stepped out of an autorickshaw and was walking towards her apartment building when an unidentified man approached her suddenly. Without warning, the assailant grabbed her gold chain, which weighed approximately nine sovereigns, and fled the scene immediately, leaving the elderly woman in distress.
Police Investigation and Arrests
Following the incident, Chennai police launched a thorough investigation that led them to Srinivasan, also known as Burma Seenu, a 50-year-old man from Royapuram. Police records reveal that Srinivasan had previously been incarcerated for robbery, having been released from prison on March 6 after serving time since October of the previous year. Investigators discovered that financial desperation drove him back to criminal activity—specifically, he needed money to repay a substantial loan.
After snatching the gold chain, Srinivasan allegedly pledged the stolen jewellery through an intermediary. The chain was pawned in the account of Kumaran, a 34-year-old autorickshaw driver from Mylapore, who facilitated the transaction. Through this arrangement, Srinivasan obtained approximately 5.2 lakh rupees from the pledged gold.
Financial Transactions and Additional Arrests
Of the money received from pawning the stolen chain, Srinivasan reportedly gave 2 lakh rupees to Anita, who police describe as an associate of a known history-sheeter named Bombay Sathya. This distribution of funds ultimately helped investigators trace the money trail and identify all parties involved in the criminal enterprise.
Police have now arrested both Kumaran, the autorickshaw driver who facilitated the pawning of the stolen jewellery, and Anita, who received a portion of the proceeds. During the arrests, authorities successfully recovered 1.91 lakh rupees of the stolen money. All three individuals—Srinivasan, Kumaran, and Anita—have been remanded to judicial custody as the legal proceedings continue.
