Chennai ANIU Cracks Down on Major Drug Distribution Network in North Chennai

In a significant operation, the Anti-Narcotics Intelligence Unit (ANIU) successfully dismantled a drug distribution network in north Chennai on Tuesday, resulting in the arrest of six suspects and the seizure of 54 grams of methamphetamine. The crackdown, which centered around the Chinnandimadam junction in Kodungaiyur, exposed a sophisticated supply chain involving individuals from diverse backgrounds, including a jewellery showroom accountant, a fast-food eatery owner, and a known history-sheeter.

Operation Details and Key Arrests

The operation commenced on Monday after ANIU sub-inspector Jayaraj utilized a confidential informant to arrange a drug purchase from 26-year-old B Vinothkumar, an MBA graduate employed as an accountant at a jewellery showroom in Sowcarpet. Vinothkumar directed his relative, R Santhosh, 23, to deliver 4 grams of methamphetamine to the informant. This initial transaction led officers to K Joseph, 23, who operates a fast-food joint in Kodungaiyur. A thorough search of the restaurant premises uncovered an additional 50 grams of methamphetamine, significantly escalating the case.

Further interrogation revealed that the narcotics were supplied to Joseph's eatery by 26-year-old K Mani, also known as ‘Othavadai' Mani, a B category history-sheeter from Puzhal. Police swiftly arrested Mani along with his associates K Thirupathi, 26, and T Salman, 19. During the raid, officers also recovered 200 grams of ganja, highlighting the network's involvement in multiple drug types. Investigators are now actively tracing the interstate links of this network to determine the precise origin of the drug supply.

Additional Drug-Related Incidents in Chennai

In a separate incident, New Washermenpet police arrested two men on Monday for smuggling 7 kilograms of ganja from Odisha. Police identified the suspects as Karthikeyan, 35, of Koyambedu, and Karthik, 25, of Pallavaram. They were intercepted during a routine vehicle check near the Tondiarpet Vaidyanathan flyover while traveling in an autorickshaw. According to police reports, the men had procured the ganja from Odisha and transported it to Chennai by train. Both individuals have been remanded to Puzhal prison pending further legal proceedings.

Meanwhile, Triplicane police conducted another operation on Tuesday, arresting four people, including two women, for possessing 1.3 kilograms of ganja intended for sale. The arrested individuals include R Appu, 22, and his wife, Sneha, 23, both residents of Otteri; D Sarathy, 23, of Pulianthope; and Sabari Priya, 19, of Otteri. All four have been remanded in judicial custody as investigations continue into their roles in the local drug trade.

Broader Implications and Ongoing Investigations

These coordinated efforts by Chennai police underscore a robust crackdown on narcotics activities in the city. The ANIU's focus on dismantling supply chains, particularly those involving interstate connections, aims to curb the flow of illegal substances into Tamil Nadu. Authorities emphasize that such operations are critical for public safety and community well-being, with ongoing investigations expected to reveal more details about the networks' operations and potential accomplices.
