Chellanam Residents Vow Strong Protests Over Fatal Bus Accident
Residents of Chellanam in Kochi have issued a stern warning of intense protests against private bus operators. This comes as the driver of a private bus, responsible for the tragic death of an 8-year-old boy on January 30, remains at large, evading arrest for over a week.
Tragic Incident Sparks Community Outrage
The victim, Enoy Jude of Maruvakkad, Chellanam, was walking along the roadside when a speeding private bus lost control while negotiating a turn. The vehicle first collided with an electric pole before striking the young boy, leading to his untimely death. The bus involved in the accident was subsequently seized by the police.
Frustrated by the driver's continued evasion of justice, residents began blocking private buses in Chellanam on Saturday. Their agitation intensified following an attempt by the bus owner to deploy another bus to replace the seized one. The community has now threatened to completely halt all private bus services in the area if the accused driver is not apprehended promptly.
Police Intensify Manhunt and Safety Measures
An officer from the Kannamaly police station confirmed that all efforts are underway to arrest the fugitive driver. "His phone is switched off, and we are actively trying to track him down," the officer stated. Meanwhile, under the directives of Kochi City Police Commissioner Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar, the city police have initiated stringent measures to curb speeding and rash driving by private buses.
In response to the rising number of accidents caused by speeding buses, a crucial meeting was convened on Friday at the Kochi City District Training Centre. Chaired by Deputy Police Commissioner Ashwathi Gigi, the meeting included representatives from the Private Bus Owners Association and bus staff.
During the session, authorities raised awareness among bus owners and crew regarding several critical areas:
- Road safety protocols and best practices
- Mandatory vehicle inspections and maintenance
- Adherence to driving guidelines and speed limits
- Legal compliance in all operational aspects
In an official statement, the police emphasized their commitment to public safety. They announced plans to continue awareness programs and increase regular inspections to strictly prevent traffic violations and ensure safer roads for all citizens.
