Chandigarh's Dark Reality: A Surge in Brutal Murders Shatters City Beautiful's Image
On the surface, Chandigarh stands as a utopia of planned urban development, celebrated for its manicured lawns and heritage buildings. However, beneath this pristine exterior, the city is seething with violence. The frequency of brutal murder cases has revealed a sinister side to the City Beautiful, casting a shadow over its reputation.
A Violent Start to 2026: Seven Murders in Two Months
The year 2026 began with a wave of violence, as seven brutal murders marred the first two months. Victims were stabbed or bludgeoned to death in various locations, including parks, a hotel, a house, and on roads. While police have claimed to solve these cases with arrests, residents' apprehensions remain high, as the sheer number of incidents has shaken the community.
Detailed Breakdown of the Murders
The cases were reported from multiple areas: Sector 38, Daria village, Sector 36, Sector 40, Hallomajra, and Maloya. Six individuals were stabbed, while one was bludgeoned to death at a park in Sector 40.

Additional Incidents of Violence
Beyond the murders, other violent acts have added to the city's crime wave. On January 15, gunshots were fired at a pharmacy in Sector 32 and a builder's house in Sector 21. The crime branch arrested four persons, including two shooters, for the Sector 32 firing. In a separate encounter in Sector 39, two shooters and an associate were arrested, with the shooters sustaining bullet injuries and being hospitalized at GMSH-16. No arrests were made in the builder's house firing case.
Rising Crime Trends and Police Response
This surge is part of a worrying trend. In 2025, Chandigarh reported 26 stabbing deaths, up from 22 in 2024. In the first two months of 2026 alone, UT police recorded 14 cases of assault involving knives and sharp-edged weapons. Additionally, 13 people were arrested under the Arms Act for carrying knives in various parts of the city.
A senior police official noted that most stabbing incidents occur in villages and rehabilitation colonies. In response, police stations have been directed to set up nakas (checkpoints) to check suspects, leading to several arrests of individuals carrying knives.
Despite these efforts, the spike in brutal crimes has left residents questioning the safety of their city, as Chandigarh's idyllic image continues to be tarnished by this dark reality.
