Chandigarh: Man Allegedly Mowed Down by Pick-Up Truck After Holi Argument

In a tragic incident on Holi night, a 23-year-old man was allegedly run over and killed by a pick-up truck driver following a heated argument over rash driving in the Ramdarbar area of Chandigarh. The Sector 31 police have swiftly arrested the driver and his helper, charging them with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and both have been sent to judicial custody.

Details of the Fatal Altercation

The victim, identified as Suraj, a cab driver and resident of Ramdarbar, was walking with his cousin Priyanshu around 3:30 PM on Wednesday when the pick-up truck came dangerously close to hitting them. Suraj and Priyanshu reportedly asked the driver to slow down, which escalated into a heated argument and physical scuffle.

According to Suraj's father, Panchi Chauhan, the driver and his helper then allegedly dragged Suraj inside the vehicle and attempted to speed away. In the ensuing struggle, Suraj fell from the moving truck and was run over. Chauhan claimed that the accused did not stop the vehicle despite seeing Suraj on the road, while Priyanshu tried to intervene but the pick-up sped off.

Police Investigation and Arrests

Suraj was rushed to GMCH-32 on a scooter by Priyanshu and a neighbor, but he succumbed to his injuries during treatment. Police were informed soon after the incident. The Sector 31 police stated that CCTV footage confirms Suraj fell from the pick-up and was hit, and that the accused drove away. The suspects claimed they fled out of fear of being assaulted by local residents.

Based on the footage and eyewitness accounts, police arrested the driver, Sunil Kumar, 30, of Zirakpur, and his associate Phool Singh, 32, originally from Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh. Sunil was driving the pick-up at the time of the incident. The victim's family has also alleged that the driver appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, adding another layer to the investigation.

Legal and Community Implications

This case highlights serious concerns about road safety and public behavior during festivals like Holi. The charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder reflect the gravity of the alleged actions, and the judicial custody ensures the accused will face legal proceedings. Authorities are urging witnesses to come forward as the investigation continues to ensure justice for Suraj and his family.
