A dramatic late-night police encounter in Greater Noida led to the arrest of a man accused of attempting to rob a senior citizen of her gold chain inside a gated residential society. The incident, which culminated in a brief exchange of gunfire, has sparked serious concerns over security protocols in urban housing complexes.
The Daylight Attempt and Security Concerns
The chain of events began inside the upscale La Residentia society in Greater Noida West. The accused, identified as Rahul Yadav, a resident of Hathras district currently staying in East Delhi, allegedly entered the condominium premises wearing a helmet. CCTV footage from the society captured him following an elderly woman into the lobby of Tower B1.
As the woman was stepping into the elevator, Yadav made his move, attempting to snatch her gold chain. The attempt caused alarm, and the accused fled the scene immediately afterwards. The brazen daytime crime, captured on camera, triggered significant outrage among the residents of La Residentia, who pointed fingers at glaring security lapses that allowed a helmeted intruder on a motorcycle to enter unchallenged.
The Dramatic Late-Night Chase and Gunfight
The breakthrough came on Saturday night during a routine police vehicle check. A team intercepted a suspicious motorcycle near the stretch between the Ace City roundabout and the Khairpur roundabout close to Sector 3. Additional DCP (Central Noida) Santosh Kumar stated that the rider, later identified as Rahul Yadav, ignored signals to stop.
In a desperate bid to escape, the suspect made a sudden U-turn and tried to flee. When police officers pursued him, the situation escalated rapidly. "The accused opened fire in an attempt to escape," said DCP Kumar. Acting in self-defence, the police team returned fire, injuring Yadav in the leg. He was subsequently taken to a hospital for treatment.
Recovery and Confession
Following the arrest, police made critical recoveries from Yadav's possession. These included a country-made pistol, one live cartridge, one spent cartridge, and a motorcycle without a number plate. Investigations revealed that the two-wheeler had been reported stolen earlier this year from the Bisrakh area of Greater Noida.
During questioning, Yadav allegedly confessed to his involvement in the attempted chain snatching at La Residentia society. Based on the evidence and confession, a formal case has been registered against him at the Bisrakh police station. The charges have been framed under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Section 304(2) for snatching and Section 62 for attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment.
The arrest has brought temporary relief but has left a lasting question mark on the effectiveness of security measures in privately managed residential enclaves, prompting calls for stricter access control and vigilance.
