How CCTV Footage Led to Breakthrough in Pune Fort Murder Case
CCTV Footage Key to Pune Fort Murder Case Breakthrough

In a dramatic breakthrough, Pune police cracked the murder case of a 32-year-old man at a historic fort within 48 hours, thanks to a distinctive hand gesture captured on CCTV footage. The victim, identified as Rohan Deshmukh, was found dead near the Shaniwar Wada fort on June 23, with multiple stab wounds. Initial investigations yielded no leads until a meticulous review of surveillance videos revealed a crucial clue.

Hand Gesture Leads to Suspect

The CCTV footage showed a suspect making a specific hand gesture while leaving the scene. Police analyzed the gesture, which appeared to be a habitual motion, and cross-referenced it with local criminal records. This led them to 28-year-old Vikram Jadhav, a known petty thief with a history of similar gestures captured on earlier police cameras. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sanjay Patil, “The gesture was unique and repeated in multiple frames, which helped us narrow down the suspect within hours.”

Details of the Crime

The murder occurred around 10:30 PM on June 23. Deshmukh, a software engineer, was out for a late-night walk near the fort when he was attacked. Police recovered a knife from the scene, but no witnesses came forward. The suspect had allegedly attempted to snatch Deshmukh’s phone, leading to a struggle that escalated into the fatal stabbing. “The victim fought back, but the assailant overpowered him,” said Inspector Meera Joshi, the lead investigator.

Arrest and Confession

Jadhav was arrested from a hideout in the outskirts of Pune on June 25. During interrogation, he confessed to the crime, stating that he had been under the influence of alcohol. “He admitted to the robbery attempt and subsequent murder, expressing remorse,” Patil added. The police also recovered Deshmukh’s mobile phone from a pawn shop, where Jadhav had sold it for Rs 5,000.

Impact and Community Response

The swift resolution has been praised by local residents, who had feared a serial offender was at large. “We are relieved that the police acted so quickly,” said a neighbor of the victim. The case highlights the growing importance of CCTV surveillance in urban policing. Pune police have installed over 10,000 cameras across the city, and this investigation underscores their effectiveness. “Without the footage, this case might have gone cold,” noted Patil.

The accused has been remanded to police custody until July 2, and further investigations are underway to determine if he is linked to other unsolved crimes in the area.
