A man died in a car explosion on a highway near Tumkuru, Karnataka, on Saturday, with police investigating whether it was a suicide linked to a marriage refusal or a failed kidnapping plot.
Incident Details
The blast occurred around 11:30 am on the Bengaluru-Pune highway, near the Kyathasandra toll plaza. The victim was identified as Nagendra, 32, a resident of Tumkuru. Witnesses reported a loud explosion, followed by flames engulfing the car.
Police recovered a gas cylinder and a lighter from the wreckage. Preliminary investigations suggest Nagendra may have deliberately ignited the cylinder. A note was found in the car, but its contents have not been disclosed.
Possible Motives
Senior police officer Manjunath Shettar stated, "We are exploring two possibilities: suicide due to personal issues, including a reported marriage refusal, or a botched kidnapping attempt that went wrong." Nagendra had been in a relationship with a woman whose family allegedly opposed their marriage, according to sources.
No other individuals were injured in the blast. The car was completely destroyed, and debris scattered over a 50-meter radius. Traffic was disrupted for over an hour as authorities cleared the scene.
Investigation Underway
Forensic teams are analyzing the vehicle remains and the note. Police are also questioning Nagendra's family and friends to establish a timeline of events. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
The incident has raised concerns about highway safety and the use of gas cylinders in vehicles. Authorities urge anyone with information to come forward.
