A 34-year-old labourer engaged by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to clean streets was killed in a freak accident in Wadala after a metal ring from the tyre of a moving towing van burst and the hubcap flew off, striking him in the neck, according to the police.
Accident Details
The deceased, identified as Shailu Maruti, was an orphan. The incident occurred on May 2 around 4:26 pm on RAK Road near Shaheen Darbar Hotel, close to National Market. The police received a wireless message about the accident, and a constable from RAK Marg police station rushed to the spot.
Upon arrival, beat marshal officer Chougule informed the constable that the accident involved a towing van. The vehicle was being driven by Mohammad Farooq Sheikh, who was reportedly towing an illegally parked vehicle at the time. During the process, the metal hubcap of the rear left tyre of the van allegedly detached and flew off with force, striking Maruti in the neck.
Injuries and Medical Response
The impact caused severe injuries, and the victim collapsed on the spot. He was immediately rushed by co-workers to KEM Hospital, where doctors declared him dead before admission.
Police Action
Deputy Commissioner of Police (zone 4) stated that the police issued an arrest notice to the towing van driver. The investigation is ongoing.
