A delegation of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, led by Bengaluru Central Member of Parliament P C Mohan, met with the Bengaluru Police Commissioner on Monday to demand the cancellation of an event expressing support for former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Umar Khalid. The BJP leaders submitted a memorandum to the Commissioner, arguing that the event could disrupt public peace and order in the city.
BJP's Concerns Over Law and Order
The BJP delegation expressed strong objections to the proposed event, which they claimed was intended to glorify Umar Khalid, who has been accused in connection with a larger conspiracy behind the 2020 Delhi riots. The party leaders urged the police to take immediate action and cancel the event, stating that allowing such a gathering would set a dangerous precedent and could lead to unrest in Bengaluru.
Memorandum Submitted to Police Commissioner
In the memorandum submitted to the Commissioner, the BJP leaders outlined their apprehensions, emphasizing that the event could potentially incite violence and disturb the communal harmony of the city. They requested the police to deny permission for the event and to take necessary preventive measures to maintain law and order.
The development comes amid heightened political tensions in Karnataka, with the BJP accusing certain groups of trying to create instability. The party has been vocal in its criticism of Umar Khalid, who remains in custody under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
As of now, there has been no official response from the Bengaluru Police Commissioner's office regarding the BJP's request. The event organizers have not yet commented on the developments.
