Farmer Fatally Injured in Bengaluru Highway Incident Linked to Tobacco Smuggling
A tragic incident unfolded on the Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) near Hoskote, where a farmer's journey turned fatal after his car was pursued and struck by miscreants in two SUVs. The event, which occurred late at night, is suspected to be connected to the smuggling of chewing tobacco products, such as gutka or pan masala.
Details of the Fatal Chase
The victim, identified as Purushottam, aged 49 and a resident of Lakkur village in Kolar district, was also employed as a driver for a major e-commerce firm. On March 21, he and his nephew, Praveen, 24, visited Laggere to have Purushottam's Maruti Swift car repaired. After completing the repairs around 8:30 PM, they returned to their hometown Lakkur for dinner before setting out again to drop Praveen at his house near Hoskote.
Trouble began near the Lakkur highway junction on the STRR stretch when Praveen noticed two black SUVs parked by the roadside. Shortly after they passed, the SUVs initiated a pursuit. Between 11:50 PM and 12:10 AM, one of the vehicles rammed their car from the rear. In a state of alarm, they steered onto the service road, but the second SUV accelerated towards them near Somalapura Gate and crashed into their vehicle.
Purushottam, who was driving, sustained severe head and chest injuries and succumbed to his wounds while being transported to the hospital. Praveen survived the incident and provided a detailed account to the police.
Police Investigation and Suspected Motive
Authorities have formed special teams to crack the case, with units dispatched to Rajasthan and other neighboring states to follow leads. Initial investigations suggest that Purushottam and Praveen may have been involved in extorting money from vehicles transporting tobacco products illegally. The smugglers in the SUVs, when chased, allegedly rammed the car and escaped the scene.
