In a shocking incident of road rage in Bengaluru's HSR Layout, an auto-rickshaw driver allegedly chased a car and assaulted a woman and her male friend. The incident, which occurred late on Tuesday night, has sparked outrage among residents.
Incident Details
The woman, a resident of HSR Layout, was driving her car with her friend when the auto driver allegedly overtook them and forced them to stop. According to the police, the auto driver accused the woman of rash driving and then began abusing her. When her friend intervened, the auto driver allegedly attacked him with a metal rod.
The woman tried to calm the situation, but the auto driver turned on her, slapping and punching her. The entire incident was captured on a CCTV camera installed in the area. The auto driver then fled the scene. The victims later filed a complaint at the HSR Layout police station.
Police Investigation
The police have registered a case under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. The auto driver has been identified and is being tracked down.
Senior police officials have assured strict action against the accused. "We have identified the auto driver and are conducting raids to apprehend him. The victims have been provided with medical assistance, and their statements have been recorded," said a police officer.
Public Reaction
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of women in public spaces. Local residents have demanded better policing and stricter action against errant auto drivers. "Such incidents are becoming common. The police need to take proactive measures to ensure the safety of commuters, especially women," said a resident.
The victim, who is still in shock, urged the authorities to ensure that the accused is punished. "I never expected such a brutal attack. I hope the police catch him soon and set an example," she said.
This is not the first such incident in Bengaluru. In recent months, several cases of auto drivers misbehaving with passengers have been reported. The transport department has also been criticized for failing to regulate the auto-rickshaw sector effectively.
