Police ASI and Notorious Cyber Fraudster Injured in Muzaffarpur Gunfight
A violent confrontation erupted between law enforcement and criminals in the Bela police station area of Muzaffarpur district on Tuesday, resulting in injuries to an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) and the primary suspect. The incident unfolded during a police operation to apprehend a notorious cyber fraudster, highlighting the escalating risks faced by officers in tackling digital crime.
Arrest Attempt Turns Deadly
The confrontation began when a police team from Bela police station, acting on specific intelligence, moved to arrest Pappu Sahni, a wanted cyber fraudster with a history of multiple ATM fraud cases. Pappu, the son of Meenapur RJD block president Umashankar Sahni, had previously served jail time and was long sought by authorities for his alleged involvement in cybercrimes.
As officers closed in on his suspected hideout, Pappu and his accomplices opened fire in a desperate bid to escape. Two bullets struck ASI Vikas Kumar, a munshi (clerk) from Undha village in Siwan district, in the stomach, causing him to collapse immediately at the scene.
Police Retaliation and Arrest
In response to the attack, the police team retaliated with return fire, hitting the main accused, Pappu Sahni, during the exchange. He was subsequently apprehended in an injured state, and a pistol was seized from his possession. The injured ASI was swiftly transported to a private hospital in Muzaffarpur, where he is currently undergoing medical treatment.
Senior police officials, including Muzaffarpur range DIG Chandan Kushwaha and SSP Kantesh Kumar Mishra, rushed to the hospital to oversee the care of the wounded officer. DIG Kushwaha confirmed that the condition of ASI Vikas Kumar is stable, providing some relief amid the tense situation.
Investigation and Interrogation Underway
Following the arrest, Pappu Sahni is being interrogated by police to uncover details about other members of his gang and any ongoing cyber fraud operations linked to him. DIG Kushwaha emphasized the importance of this investigation, stating that it aims to dismantle the criminal network and prevent further illicit activities.
