Armed Robbers Storm Central Bank of India Branch in Bihar's Madhepura District
In a brazen daylight heist, armed robbers targeted a branch of the Central Bank of India in Bihar's Madhepura district on Thursday, making off with approximately Rs 1.3 lakh in cash after creating panic among customers and staff.
Details of the Daring Robbery
The incident unfolded in the Murho locality under the jurisdiction of the Bharrahi police station when three young robbers, estimated to be between 20 and 25 years of age, executed their plan with chilling precision.
The operation followed a coordinated approach:
- One robber maintained watch outside the bank premises
- Two accomplices entered the bank building
- The intruders immediately fired two rounds into the air to create widespread panic
- Customers and security personnel were pushed aside as the robbers moved toward their target
Manager Forced to Open Vault at Gunpoint
According to branch manager Shiv Kumar, one of the criminals went directly to his cabin and demanded cash while pointing a firearm at him. "Seeing a threat to my life, I was forced to open the vault without resistance," Kumar recounted. "The criminals took out the cash kept there and fled immediately. The third accomplice standing outside also escaped with them."
The robbers reportedly escaped with Rs 1.3 lakh, a relatively modest amount that suggests the vault contained limited cash reserves at the time of the incident.
Police Investigation Underway
Sadar SDPO Pravendra Bharti confirmed the details of the robbery, stating: "Upon receiving information, police reached the spot. A bank robbery of approximately Rs 1.3 lakh has been confirmed. Prima facie, three persons were involved in the robbery."
The investigation has revealed several critical details:
- CCTV cameras are being thoroughly scanned to identify the perpetrators
- Raids are being conducted in surrounding areas to track down the suspects
- Police expect to make arrests soon based on gathered evidence
Security System Compromised During Maintenance
A significant vulnerability was uncovered during the preliminary investigation. The SDPO confirmed that wiring work was underway on the bank's CCTV cameras at the time of the robbery, effectively compromising the security surveillance system and potentially facilitating the criminals' escape without clear video evidence.
Notable Location of the Targeted Branch
The targeted Central Bank of India branch holds additional significance due to its location adjacent to the ancestral residence of former Chief Minister B.P. Mandal, adding a layer of political context to the security breach in what might otherwise be considered a secure neighborhood.
This incident highlights ongoing security challenges facing financial institutions in the region and raises questions about protocol during security system maintenance. The Madhepura police have assured the public that they are pursuing all leads and expect to resolve the case promptly.
