Ahmedabad Woman Assaulted by Brother, Files FIR After Family Fails to Resolve Dispute
Ahmedabad woman files FIR after brother's assault in Vadaj

A 32-year-old woman in Ahmedabad was forced to seek police intervention after a violent altercation with her brother at their family home in the old Vadaj area. The incident, which occurred on January 3, escalated from a minor domestic argument to a physical assault, resulting in the woman sustaining injuries that required hospital treatment.

Details of the Violent Altercation

According to the First Information Report (FIR) registered at the Vadaj police station, the incident took place around 1:45 PM on January 3. The woman was present at home with her parents and brother. She was engaged in cooking in the kitchen when her brother entered and accidentally dropped a container.

When she asked him to wash the fallen container, he reportedly became aggressive and splashed water at her. During the ensuing argument, some hot water from the utensil she was holding accidentally spilled onto him, which further enraged him.

Assault and Hospitalization

Police officials stated that the brother then allegedly began abusing her with filthy language. The verbal abuse quickly turned physical. He is accused of assaulting her with his fists and kicks.

In a fit of rage, he also allegedly picked up a vessel from the kitchen and struck her with it. This blow caused injuries near her left eye. Following the assault, the woman was rushed to Sola Civil Hospital in an ambulance.

Doctors at the hospital treated her wounds and administered stitches near her eyebrow before discharging her.

Failed Family Assurance Leads to Police Complaint

The complaint was formally lodged with Vadaj police on Tuesday, following the failure of family intervention to resolve the matter. The woman revealed in her statement that she initially chose not to approach the police after the incident.

This decision was based on an assurance from her father that her brother would no longer continue living with the family. However, this assurance was not honored.

"Despite the assurance, the brother continued to live in the house," a police official explained. "When the issue was raised again recently, the family insisted that he would continue living there. This left the complainant with no option but to seek legal action."

Legal Action Under New Law

Based on the woman's complaint, the Vadaj police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to voluntarily causing hurt and the use of abusive language. The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
