Ahmedabad Woman Files Police Complaint Over Years of Dowry Harassment and Domestic Violence

A 35-year-old woman residing in the Chandkheda area of Ahmedabad has taken legal action by filing a formal police complaint against her husband and in-laws. The complaint details a distressing pattern of alleged harassment, physical violence, and persistent dowry-related demands that began shortly after her marriage in 2016.

Allegations of Control and Isolation

According to the complaint submitted to the Chandkheda police, the woman's husband initiated a campaign of suspicion and control almost immediately after their wedding. She alleges that he imposed severe restrictions, effectively confining her to their home and prohibiting her from stepping outside. The situation was reportedly exacerbated by her mother-in-law and father-in-law, who are accused of supporting their son's actions and contributing to the harassment over various household matters.

Financial Exploitation and Dowry Demands

The woman's ordeal intensified with financial exploitation. During her pregnancy, she claims her husband provided no support, forcing her parents to cover all expenses related to the birth of their daughter. Upon returning to her matrimonial home, her husband allegedly began demanding money, instructing her to procure funds from her father's house.

The financial demands escalated significantly:

  • Her father reportedly transferred Rs 4 lakh to her husband's account for a house purchase.
  • After incurring losses in share trading, her husband repeatedly sought additional money.
  • He demanded that she bring her mother's jewellery, to which her mother complied by handing over a gold necklace.

Despite these concessions, the harassment allegedly continued unabated. The complainant further accuses her husband of taking personal loans using her identity documents without her knowledge or consent, adding another layer of financial abuse.

Physical Violence and Ejection from Home

The situation reached a critical point in January 2021 when the woman alleges she was assaulted by her husband, in-laws, and other relatives. During this violent incident, she claims she was physically "pushed out of the house," effectively being ejected from her matrimonial home.

Multiple attempts at reconciliation were made by family members and community elders, but no resolution was achieved. Exhausted by years of alleged abuse and failed mediation efforts, the woman finally approached the Chandkheda police and filed her formal complaint on Friday, seeking justice and legal recourse.

This case highlights ongoing issues of domestic violence and dowry harassment in certain communities, underscoring the importance of legal intervention and support systems for victims. The Chandkheda police are now investigating the allegations as the woman seeks protection and accountability for the years of suffering she has endured.
