Quick-Thinking Duo Thwarts Mobile Theft in Ahmedabad
A sports teacher's alertness and an autorickshaw driver's prompt action led to the dramatic capture of two alleged mobile phone thieves following a morning chase through the streets of Ahmedabad on Wednesday. The incident highlights how civic cooperation can effectively combat street crime.
The Morning Commute Takes a Wrong Turn
The episode began around 6:10 am when Vipul Rawal, 25, a sports teacher at Sankalp International School in Nikol, was waiting for transport near Bhadreshwar crossroads. A resident of Sardar Nagar, Rawal boarded an autorickshaw carrying three passengers. However, after travelling a mere 300 metres, he was asked to disembark.
He then took another auto. It was soon after that he made a distressing discovery: his mobile phone was missing from his trouser pocket. He immediately suspected the occupants of the previous autorickshaw.
The Chase and Confrontation
Displaying remarkable presence of mind, Rawal informed his current driver about the theft and requested help in pursuing the suspect vehicle. The driver agreed and they managed to follow the first autorickshaw to the Nandigram area, where they successfully blocked its path.
As the vehicle halted, one of the three suspects fled the scene. Rawal and the driver, however, managed to apprehend the other two. The detained individuals were identified as Sarfaraz Saiyed, 20, an auto driver from Danilimda, and Sameer Saiyed, 19, a resident of Vatva.
During the confrontation, Sameer handed the stolen mobile phone back to Rawal before trying to escape, leading to a brief scuffle.
Police Action and Ongoing Search
Police were alerted via the emergency number 112. A police van arrived promptly at the location, and the two accused were formally handed over to the Airport police for further legal action. An FIR has been registered based on Rawal's complaint.
Authorities have confirmed that a search is underway for the third suspect who managed to flee during the incident. The swift collaboration between a vigilant citizen and a public transport driver proved crucial in solving this crime.
