The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) in Uttar Pradesh has taken a serious step by registering a formal case against police personnel from Agra. The officers stand accused of subjecting a local farmer to brutal custodial torture, an incident that has sparked outrage and demands for accountability.
Details of the Alleged Custodial Violence
The shocking event unfolded on Sunday, when 42-year-old Raju Sharma was reportedly picked up from his home in Karhara village. He was taken into custody by officials from the Kirawali police station for questioning related to a four-month-old murder case of a retired Army personnel. According to the victim's family, Sharma's ordeal involved being hung upside down and mercilessly beaten by the policemen during interrogation.
The alleged assault was so severe that it resulted in both of Sharma's legs being fractured. Following the incident, his distressed family approached local political representatives to seek justice, setting in motion a series of official actions.
Official Actions and Internal Probe
Acting on the complaint, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Atul Sharma directed Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Rampravesh Gupta to investigate the matter. However, the family raised objections, alleging that ACP Gupta prepared a one-sided report without recording their statement.
Subsequently, DCP Atul Sharma took a personal interest in the case. He visited the hospital where Raju Sharma was being treated and thoroughly examined his medical records. The X-ray reports and other documents confirmed serious injuries, including ligament fractures and multiple bruises on the farmer's body. Based on this concrete medical evidence, the DCP recommended strict action against those responsible.
Suspensions, Transfers, and Rights Bodies Step In
On Monday night, following the DCP's recommendation, Police Commissioner Deepak Kumar issued orders for disciplinary action. The following personnel were immediately suspended: Kirawali Station House Officer (SHO) Neeraj Singh, Sub-Inspector Dharmveer Singh, and constable Ravi Malik. Additionally, ACP Rampravesh Gupta was removed from his post for alleged negligence in the investigation and transferred to the traffic department.
The case has now attracted the attention of state and national human rights bodies. Agra-based lawyer and human rights activist Naresh Paras filed formal complaints with both the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC). Officials confirmed that a team from the SHRC will soon visit Agra to record the victim's statement firsthand.
A parallel probe into the entire incident, led by DIG-rank officer ACP Rambadan Singh, is also currently underway to ensure a comprehensive investigation.
Victim's Condition and Family's Anguish
The physical and emotional toll on the victim and his family remains immense. Sharma's father, Radhey Shyam, provided a grim update on his son's health, stating, "My son is still bedridden and will take at least three months to get back on his feet." The family's pursuit of justice continues as they hope for a fair outcome from the ongoing probes.
This incident in Agra has once again brought the critical issue of police conduct and custodial rights into sharp focus, prompting calls for systemic reforms and stricter oversight to prevent such alleged brutality in the future.
