AAP MLA gets 7-year jail for assaulting forest officials in Gujarat

A court in Gujarat's Narmada district on Tuesday sentenced Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Chhotu Vasava and eight others to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for assaulting forest officials and extorting money from them in 2021.

Incident and Charges

According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on June 16, 2021, when Vasava, the MLA from Jhagadia, along with his associates, confronted a team of forest officials who were conducting a routine inspection in the Sardar Sarovar dam area. The forest officials were checking for illegal fishing and encroachments when Vasava and his group allegedly attacked them.

It was alleged that Vasava grabbed a forest official by his uniform collar, slapped him twice, and fired an illegal pistol into the air to intimidate the team. The group then extorted Rs 60,000 from the officials before fleeing the scene.

Legal Proceedings and Verdict

The forest department filed a complaint, and the police registered a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including assault, criminal intimidation, extortion, and unlawful possession of firearms. The trial was conducted in a fast-track court in Rajpipla.

On Tuesday, the court found Vasava and eight others guilty of the charges and sentenced them to seven years of rigorous imprisonment. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on each convict.

Reactions and Implications

The verdict has drawn mixed reactions. The forest department officials expressed satisfaction, stating that the judgment would serve as a deterrent against attacks on government officials. However, AAP leaders have termed the case politically motivated and announced plans to appeal the verdict.

Vasava was arrested shortly after the verdict and sent to jail. His lawyer said they would challenge the order in a higher court. The eight other convicts include his close associates and relatives.

The case highlights the ongoing tensions between local political figures and forest authorities in the region, where illegal activities such as mining and fishing are common.
