Tragic Drowning of 5-Year-Old Boy in Greater Noida Highlights Safety Lapses

A five-year-old boy playing outside his home in Preet Vihar Colony, Greater Noida, tragically drowned on Wednesday afternoon after allegedly slipping into a water-filled pit. The incident has sparked renewed concerns over safety measures in residential and construction areas.

Details of the Incident

According to police reports, the victim, identified as Dev, was a nursery student at a school in nearby Chapraula village. He had returned home around 1 pm and went out to play near his residence. Around 1:30 pm, he fell into a pit—a farmland where wastewater from the colony accumulates—located a short distance from his home.

While the exact depth of the pit was not immediately clear, authorities stated that the child could not escape on his own. Neighbors and passersby quickly pulled Dev out of the water and rushed him to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, doctors were unable to revive him, as confirmed by his father, Umesh Kumar.

Ongoing Safety Concerns

Police confirmed that the field where the wastewater collected belongs to a local farmer. No formal complaint has been filed by the family regarding the incident. This tragedy is not an isolated case in the region, highlighting a pattern of safety negligence.

On February 27, a four-year-old boy drowned after slipping into the Ganga canal while playing with his siblings in Dankaur. His body was recovered about 120 km downstream in Mathura after six days. Investigations revealed that the canal near the child's house lacked any protective walls, railings, or fencing.

Earlier, on January 16 night, a software engineer, Yuvraj Mehta, drowned when his SUV fell into a deep pit at an under-construction commercial site in Sector 150. He was negotiating a sharp turn near ATS Le Grandiose when his vehicle smashed through a damaged boundary wall into a trench dug for a double basement. The site had no barricades, reflectors, or warning signs.

Widespread Safety Issues in Noida

A survey conducted by TOI following Mehta's death uncovered numerous hazardous excavations along or near busy roads in sectors such as 32, 85, 150, and 154. Many of these sites feature:

  • Steep drops
  • Dense vegetation
  • Exposed columns with protruding iron rods

Despite these dangers, basic safety measures like barricades, warning signs, or reflective markers are often absent, posing significant risks to residents and commuters.

This series of incidents underscores the urgent need for improved safety protocols and stricter enforcement in urban areas to prevent such tragedies in the future.
