In a targeted operation in the first week of 2026, the Delhi Police apprehended five foreign nationals from Bangladesh in the outer Delhi region. The individuals were found to have overstayed their visas and were allegedly attempting to secure travel documents for other countries while residing illegally in India.
Tip-Off Leads to Heightened Surveillance
The operation was launched after the district's foreigner cell received specific intelligence about foreign nationals overstaying their visas in the area. Acting on this tip-off, the police team, under the supervision of DCP (outer) Sachin Sharma, initiated a verification drive, checking around 100 people during the week.
"Sensing police surveillance, the suspects tried to flee to avoid verification. The team stepped up checks at transit points, including border areas and railway stations, to prevent their escape," stated DCP Sharma. The proactive measures were designed to cut off potential escape routes for those attempting to evade legal scrutiny.
The Apprehension Near Mangolpuri Railway Line
The breakthrough came when a police team, conducting checks near the Mangolpuri railway line, spotted a group of five people carrying luggage. Upon noticing the police, the individuals tried to disperse but were swiftly caught and detained.
A search of their possessions revealed expired passports and visas, confirming their illegal status. The police identified the five men as:
- Rashedullah Chowdhury (50)
- Mohammad Zakir Hussain (37)
- Mohebbul Islam (36)
- Mohammad Moinuddin (35)
- Hritik Raj Banik (22)
All five hailed from Bangladesh. Preliminary investigations suggested they were trying to obtain visas for other countries despite having no valid Indian travel documents.
Initiation of Deportation Proceedings
Following the arrest and verification of their identities, the Delhi Police have initiated formal deportation proceedings. The process is being coordinated with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), the central agency responsible for regulating the entry and stay of foreigners in India.
This case highlights the continued vigilance of Delhi Police's foreigner cell in tracking individuals who violate visa norms. Such operations are part of routine checks to maintain compliance with immigration laws and national security protocols in the capital region.
