In a distressing incident in Erode district, burglars made away with gold jewellery valued at approximately Rs 3.5 lakh from a house in Perundurai. The theft targeted the home of a woman whose husband works abroad, highlighting the vulnerabilities faced by NRI families.
Family Returns to a Ransacked Home
The burglary came to light on Sunday evening when Y Poornima (35) returned to her house in Manju Nagar, Perundurai. She had been away with her two children and mother, visiting a relative's house in Pollachi since January 2. Upon their return, they were met with a broken front door lock, signalling an intrusion.
Upon entering, Poornima discovered that an almirah in one of the rooms had been forced open. The contents were in disarray, and around 3.5 sovereigns of gold jewellery, with an estimated market value of Rs 3.5 lakh, was missing. The family immediately alerted the local authorities.
Police Launch Investigation into the Theft
Based on the formal complaint lodged by Poornima, the Perundurai police have registered a case and initiated a thorough investigation. Officers are examining the scene for forensic evidence and are likely to question neighbours to gather potential leads on suspicious activities during the family's absence.
The case has drawn attention to the security concerns for families with members working overseas. Poornima's husband, K P Yuvaraj, is employed in Saudi Arabia, leaving the family vulnerable during his absence. This pattern is not uncommon in regions with a high number of migrant workers.
Security Concerns for NRI Families
This incident in Perundurai serves as a stark reminder for residents, especially those in households where a primary member is working abroad, to enhance their home security measures. Local police often advise such families to:
- Install robust locking systems and consider alarm systems.
- Inform trusted neighbours or local relatives during extended absences.
- Avoid keeping large amounts of cash or jewellery at home.
- Utilise bank lockers for valuable possessions.
The investigation is ongoing, and police are pursuing all angles to recover the stolen gold and apprehend the culprits responsible for this brazen daytime burglary in Erode district.
