Three commuters sustained injuries during a shocking attack on a suburban train in Chennai on Monday morning. The incident occurred when unidentified individuals hurled empty liquor bottles into the moving compartments.
Attack Details and Passenger Injuries
The assault took place around 9:30 am on Monday between Vyasarpadi and Basin Bridge railway stations. The affected EMU train was travelling from Tiruvallur towards Chennai Central. According to police reports, a group of people drinking beside the railway tracks targeted the passing train, throwing empty beer and liquor bottles at it.
One of the bottles struck the iron window grill of a compartment, shattering upon impact. The resulting glass shards flew inside, injuring passengers. The injured individuals have been identified as Satish Kumar (38), Anandan (42), and Palanivel (41). Satish Kumar suffered a head injury, while Anandan and Palanivel sustained cuts on their faces and hands.
Immediate Response and Medical Care
Alerted about the incident, Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel and the station master swiftly intervened. Following their advice, the injured passengers continued their journey to Chennai Central railway station. From there, they were rushed to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for urgent medical treatment. All three are currently undergoing care for their wounds.
Preliminary enquiries by the GRP suggest that the attackers threw at least three to four bottles before the passengers could even react. The sudden nature of the assault left those in the compartment with little time to take protective measures.
Ongoing Police Investigation
The Government Railway Police have registered a case and launched a manhunt to identify and apprehend the culprits. Efforts are underway to scan the area for clues and gather witness accounts. Such reckless acts endanger public safety and disrupt the secure environment essential for daily commuters.
This incident highlights a concerning breach of security along railway tracks and has raised alarms about the safety of passengers on one of Chennai's busiest suburban routes. The GRP has assured the public that all necessary steps are being taken to bring the miscreants to justice.
