Major Watershed Initiative Launched in Maharashtra to Transform Agricultural Landscape
A transformative mega watershed project is being established in Nanded, Maharashtra, with the ambitious goal of doubling farmers' income through comprehensive agricultural development. This high-impact initiative spans multiple districts, targeting significant improvements in irrigation and rural sustainability.
Extensive Geographical Coverage Across Five Districts
The project encompasses 26 talukas spread across five districts in Maharashtra. In Nanded district alone, six talukas are included: Nanded, Kandhar, Kinwat, Loha, Mukhed, and Hadgaon. The initiative extends beyond Nanded to include Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Gondia, and Yavatmal districts, creating a substantial regional impact.
Core Objectives and Implementation Framework
The primary objective of this watershed project is to strengthen gram panchayats and support local bodies in planning, monitoring, and implementing watershed development activities. According to a release from the state commissioner for Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), the project aims to create sustainable agricultural infrastructure while boosting rural employment.
The five-year implementation plan focuses on several key areas:
- Providing reliable irrigation facilities to farmers
- Increasing agricultural income through improved water management
- Developing 878 micro-watersheds across the 26 talukas
- Irrigating approximately 4.39 lakh hectares of agricultural land
Comprehensive Educational and Conservation Components
The project incorporates multiple strategic elements designed to create lasting change in the agricultural sector:
- Educating stakeholders about effective planning and implementation at the district level
- Maintaining soil moisture through advanced soil and water conservation techniques
- Reducing dependence on unpredictable rainwater through sustainable irrigation systems
- Promoting multi-cropping systems to maximize land productivity
- Creating sustainable and productive structures under the MGNREGS framework
Collaborative Partnership for Project Execution
A memorandum of understanding has been signed between key organizations to ensure successful project implementation. The partnership includes Axis Bank Foundation, Bharat Gramin Jeevika Foundation, and the state commissioner of MGNREGS. This collaboration operates under the guidance of the chief minister, ensuring coordinated execution and resource allocation.
