Varanasi's Pre-Monsoon Drainage Overhaul: A ₹1.80 Crore Solution

In a proactive move to tackle the perennial issue of waterlogging, the Varanasi Nagar Nigam (VNN) has launched an ambitious pre-monsoon drainage rectification campaign across the city. With the cleaning of drains already in progress, authorities have introduced a state-of-the-art amphibious drain master machine, valued at ₹1.80 crore, to accelerate efforts and ensure smoother urban functioning during the impending rainy season.

Mayor Inaugurates High-Tech Amphibious Machine

On Thursday, Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari officially inaugurated the advanced amphibious drain master machine, marking a significant step in Varanasi's infrastructure upgrade. Following the inauguration, Mayor Tiwari personally operated the machine to test its capabilities, demonstrating the administration's hands-on approach to civic management.

This cutting-edge machine boasts unique technology that allows it to operate seamlessly in three distinct conditions: dry surfaces, deep sludge, and water. With an impressive waste disposal capacity of 30 tonnes per day, it is poised to revolutionize the cleaning of the city's major drains, ponds, and lakes. Additionally, it will play a crucial role in removing accumulated silt from the sacred Ganga and Varuna rivers, addressing both environmental and logistical challenges.

The introduction of this machine is expected to provide substantial relief from waterlogging problems that have historically plagued Varanasi during the monsoon months. By enhancing drainage efficiency, the VNN aims to minimize disruptions and improve the quality of life for residents.

Intensive Inspections and Directives from City Officials

Post-inauguration, Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari, alongside Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal, conducted a thorough inspection of critical drainage points. The team visited the Sankat Mochan culvert and various drains in the Assi area, including those near Ravidas Park, Assi Nala, and the under-construction multi-storage parking at Assi Ghat.

During the inspection, the cleanliness and maintenance conditions at Ratnakar Park were found to be unsatisfactory, prompting Mayor Tiwari to express strong displeasure. He issued immediate directives to concerned officials to improve arrangements, emphasizing that citizens should not face any inconvenience during the rains. The mayor stressed the importance of completing all desilting work within the stipulated time frame to ensure preparedness.

The event was attended by Additional Municipal Commissioner Savita Yadav, along with other senior officials and employees of the Nagar Nigam, underscoring the collective commitment to this initiative.

Cricketer Washington Sundar Participates in Ganga Aarti

In a separate cultural highlight, Indian cricketer Washington Sundar, known for his unique style in the national team, visited Varanasi on Thursday evening. Accompanied by friends, he participated in the world-famous Maa Ganga Aarti organized by Ganga Seva Nidhi at Dashashwamedh Ghat.

Sundar performed worship of Maa Ganga according to Vedic rituals and appeared mesmerized by the aarti ceremony. Currently playing for Gujarat Titans in the IPL, he recently achieved a major milestone by scoring his career's first half-century for Gujarat against Delhi Capitals in IPL 2026.

He was warmly welcomed by Ganga Seva Nidhi president Sushant Mishra, treasurer Ashish Tiwari, and secretary Hanuman Yadav, who presented him with an Ang Vastra, Rudraksha mala, and prasad. In the visitor book, Sundar expressed that the experience was wonderful and that he would feel like returning again and again. His presence at Dashashwamedh Ghat for approximately an hour excited the attendees during the Maa Ganga Aarti.
