Uttar Pradesh Launches 15-Day Jal Mahotsav to Empower Gram Panchayats with Water Supply
In a significant move to enhance rural water infrastructure, a 15-day Jal Mahotsav event was inaugurated on Sunday in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. This initiative, organized by the State Water and Sanitation Mission (SWSM), aims to transfer the responsibility of household water supply in rural areas to gram panchayats, with the ambitious goal of achieving 100 per cent piped water connections across the state.
Event Launch and Coverage Details
The programme was officially launched at Mohanlalganj, specifically in Hussainabad Doolahpur village within the Gosainganj block. Amresh Kumar, the MLA of Mohanlalganj, presided over the inauguration ceremony, highlighting the event's local impact. He stated that over 750 families in the area are set to benefit directly from this initiative. To demonstrate confidence in the water quality, Kumar personally drank water from one of the households and expressed satisfaction with its standards.
This Jal Mahotsav is part of a broader effort to cover almost 22,000 villages throughout Uttar Pradesh. The event will continue until March 22, providing a focused period for implementation and awareness-raising activities.
Infrastructure Progress and Achievements
Raj Shekhar, the Managing Director of SWSM, provided insights into the mission's tangible progress. He reported that in Gosainganj village alone, 11 kilometers of pipeline have been laid to ensure water access to all households. This infrastructural development marks a substantial improvement from previous conditions.
Shekhar emphasized the mission's success by noting a dramatic increase in functional tap connections. Before the mission's launch, only 25,000 tap connections were operational across the state. However, through concerted efforts, this number has surged to 2.25 lakh connections, showcasing a ninefold growth and underscoring the programme's effectiveness in expanding water accessibility.
