Uttar Pradesh Pioneers Self-Enumeration for Census 2027 in Kanpur

In a groundbreaking move, Uttar Pradesh is set to launch a self-enumeration process for the upcoming Census 2027, marking the first time citizens can independently enter their details online. This innovative facility will be available from May 7 to May 21, enabling residents across the state, including Kanpur, to register personal and family information from the comfort of their homes.

Digital Transformation in Census Operations

District Magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh emphasized that this digital self-enumeration represents a significant leap forward in modernizing census operations. "This initiative streamlines data collection and enhances accuracy by empowering citizens to participate directly," he stated. Following the self-enumeration window, enumerators will conduct door-to-door house listing and verification from May 22 to June 20.

The census process is structured into two key phases:

  • First Phase: House listing and household enumeration from May 22 to June 20, 2026.
  • Second Phase: Actual population count scheduled for February 2027.

Comprehensive Data Collection and Historical Significance

Census 2027 will be India's 16th census and the eighth since independence, serving as the most reliable source of primary data at village, city, and ward levels. Singh highlighted that this edition will be entirely digital, with self-enumeration introduced for the first time, reflecting a shift towards more efficient and transparent governance.

How to Participate in Self-Enumeration

Residents can access the official Census Self-Enumeration Portal during the designated period. The registration process involves several steps:

  1. Select the state of residence.
  2. Enter the name of the head of the household.
  3. Provide a valid 10-digit mobile number for OTP verification, with only one family registration allowed per number.

Users can choose their preferred language, input details such as district, PIN code, and locality, and mark their residence on a digital map. After reviewing the information, submission generates a unique 11-digit registration number sent via mobile or email.

Verification and House Listing Details

When enumerators visit households, residents must present this registration number for verification. In cases of discrepancies, officials will re-collect the data to ensure accuracy. During the house-listing phase, surveyors will gather extensive information, including:

  • Building usage and construction materials.
  • Number of rooms and ownership status.
  • Availability of basic amenities like water, electricity, and toilets.
  • Type of cooking fuel and ownership of assets such as phones, vehicles, and televisions.

Call to Action for Residents

Appealing to the public, Singh urged citizens to actively participate in large numbers between May 7 and May 21. "Your engagement is crucial for the success of Census 2027, ensuring comprehensive and accurate data collection," he remarked. This initiative not only simplifies the process but also fosters greater community involvement in national statistics.
