Massive crackdown on unsafe coaching centres across Uttar Pradesh
In the aftermath of a tragic fire incident in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh authorities have launched a sweeping enforcement drive against coaching centres operating without adequate safety measures. Over 200 such institutions have been sealed across the state, with Ghaziabad recording the highest number of closures at 59.
The action follows a devastating fire at a coaching centre in Lucknow that raised serious concerns about fire safety compliance in educational facilities. The state government ordered immediate inspections and sealing of all coaching centres that failed to meet basic safety standards.
District-wise sealing figures reveal widespread violations
According to officials, the sealing drive covered multiple districts. In Ghaziabad, 59 coaching centres were sealed, while six were shut down in Hapur. Raebareli saw 12 closures, Shamli 46, Ayodhya 7, Baghpat 40, and Bijnor 28. The total number of sealed centres exceeds 200, highlighting the scale of non-compliance.
Authorities stated that the inspections focused on fire extinguishers, emergency exits, electrical wiring, and overcrowding. Many centres were found operating in cramped, poorly ventilated spaces with no fire safety equipment.
Government response and future measures
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered a stringent safety audit of all coaching centres in the state. "We will not tolerate any compromise on the safety of students. All coaching institutes must adhere to strict fire safety norms," a government spokesperson said.
The crackdown is part of a broader initiative to prevent similar tragedies. The state has also directed district magistrates to conduct regular inspections and ensure compliance within a stipulated timeframe.
