TTD Allocates ₹8 Crore for Security Upgrade at Tirumala

Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams Invests ₹8 Crore in Comprehensive Security Modernization

The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has taken a significant step toward enhancing the safety and security of its sacred premises by allocating a substantial budget of ₹8 crore. This investment is specifically earmarked for the modernization and comprehensive upgrade of the security apparatus at critical locations throughout Tirumala and Tirupati. A primary focus of this initiative is the Alipiri Checkpoint, which serves as the main gateway to the revered hill shrine of Tirumala.

Board Approval for Advanced Security Equipment Procurement

During a recent trust board meeting convened at Tirumala, the TTD board, under the leadership of chairman BR Naidu, granted formal consent to multiple proposals presented by the vigilance and security department. These proposals outline the acquisition of state-of-the-art security technologies, including:

  • Advanced X-ray baggage screening systems
  • High-sensitivity metal detectors
  • Full-body scanners for thorough personal checks
  • Specialized cargo scanners for vehicle inspection

The board's approval marks a pivotal move toward implementing a more robust security framework to safeguard the millions of devotees who visit annually.

Addressing the Needs of a Massive Pilgrim Footfall

In its detailed proposals, the vigilance and security department emphasized the immense scale of pilgrim visitation to the abode of Lord Venkateswara. Tirumala witnesses an annual influx of over 2.5 crore devotees from across India and around the world. Furthermore, the department noted a noticeable surge in visits by VVIPs and celebrities in recent years, adding to the complexity of security management.

To ensure adequate protection for all visiting devotees and to secure important temples and other TTD assets located in and around Tirupati, it is imperative to periodically upgrade and enhance the security systems, the department stated. This proactive approach aims to maintain a safe and serene environment for spiritual pursuits.

Strategic Recommendations from Security Audits

The decision to upgrade security follows a series of high-level security audit review meetings conducted in May and October of the previous year. These assessments were complemented by a detailed report submitted by RAXA, a company under the GMR group, which provided expert insights into security vulnerabilities and improvements.

Based on these evaluations, the TTD vigilance department proposed several key measures, including:

  1. Installation of full-body vehicle scanners at Alipiri and other strategic entry points to Tirumala to enable automated and efficient screening of all incoming vehicles.
  2. Upgradation of existing luggage scanners to models with improved capacity and faster processing capabilities.
  3. Enhanced training programs for security operators, aligning with the stringent standards set by the Bureau of Civil Aviation to ensure professional and effective handling of security equipment.

Comprehensive Assessment and Budget Allocation

Prior to the board meeting, the TTD vigilance department conducted a thorough exercise to assess the specific requirements for various security gadgets. This assessment identified the need for:

  • X-ray baggage scanners for detailed inspection of personal belongings
  • Door frame metal detectors (DFMD) for screening individuals at entry points
  • Hand-held metal detectors (HHMD) for supplementary checks and mobility

After reviewing these requirements, the trust board accorded its approval to procure the necessary security equipment, allocating a total budget of ₹8 crore for the entire modernization project. This investment underscores TTD's commitment to leveraging advanced technology to enhance security protocols and ensure the well-being of every devotee visiting the holy sites.
