Thiruvananthapuram Corporation Enhances Waste Management with New Enforcement Vehicles
In a significant move to bolster urban sanitation, the Thiruvananthapuram City Corporation has strengthened its health enforcement wing by adding two new vehicles equipped with modern facilities. This initiative, announced on Saturday, is specifically aimed at improving waste management monitoring and sanitation enforcement across the city.
Investment from Penalty Funds
The vehicles were procured at a cost of Rs 23 lakh, utilizing funds generated through penalties collected by the health department. Over recent years, public health inspectors under the corporation have mobilized as much as Rs 2.53 crore in fines as part of intensified action against improper waste disposal and violations of sanitation rules.
Officials emphasized that reinvesting these funds into enforcement infrastructure is a key component of a broader strategy to strengthen urban waste management systems. This approach ensures that penalties directly contribute to improving the city's cleanliness and regulatory framework.
Operational Enhancements and Round-the-Clock Monitoring
The newly added vehicles will support seven enforcement squads that operate in three shifts, enabling round-the-clock monitoring and quicker response to complaints. These squads are tasked with critical responsibilities, including:
- Checking illegal dumping activities
- Ensuring proper segregation of waste at source
- Enforcing regulations under the state's solid waste management framework
This operational upgrade is expected to significantly enhance the efficiency and reach of enforcement efforts, allowing for more proactive and timely interventions in sanitation issues.
Alignment with National Initiatives and Improved Compliance
Civic authorities noted that Thiruvananthapuram has been ramping up enforcement in line with national initiatives such as the Swachh Bharat Mission. Increased inspections and penalty drives in commercial areas, markets, and residential zones have led to a notable improvement in compliance levels in recent years.
