Passengers in Thiruvananthapuram are expressing growing frustration and facing significant safety risks due to a dysfunctional bus bay at the Ayurveda College bus stop, located on the East Fort-Statue stretch of MG Road. The core issue is that numerous buses are bypassing the designated bay entirely, opting instead to halt on the opposite side of the road median to pick up passengers before departing.
Design Flaws and Risky Crossings
This alarming practice forces commuters to dangerously hop across the bus bay and navigate active traffic lanes to reach their buses. The problem is compounded by fundamental design flaws in the bay itself. Although constructed off the main carriageway, the placement of bus shelters is so inefficient that it prevents more than two buses from stopping sequentially.
This leads to immediate queuing. When buses line up inside the bay, drivers at the rear often pull out onto MG Road, parking parallel to the bay alongside the median. This chaotic parking makes it nearly impossible for waiting passengers to board safely and efficiently.
Commuter Voices Highlight Systemic Failure
The unscientific location of the bus stops within the bay creates a frantic environment. Passengers are compelled to scurry after buses as they arrive, unable to wait at a fixed, safe point.
"It is becoming extremely difficult to board when buses arrive. Often, it's hard to even spot the bus I need. The authorities must ensure that all buses enter the bus bay properly," said P Rajalakshmi, a regular commuter.
The lack of oversight exacerbates the situation. During peak hours, Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) services operate without proper regulation, while private buses go entirely unmonitored.
Another commuter, Pradeep P, emphasized the need for intervention: "Either KSRTC or the traffic police should deploy staff specifically to regulate the buses at this stop. The current free-for-all is unacceptable."
Driver Perspective Points to Infrastructure Limits
The challenges are not lost on the bus crews either. A KSRTC bus crew member explained the operational dilemma: "We simply cannot enter the bay when there is bunching. There is no space to queue without causing a major traffic block on MG Road. This is the primary reason some buses stop by the side of the median."
This statement underscores a critical infrastructure failure. The bay's design does not account for peak-hour volume, creating a catch-22 where compliance with the bay causes congestion, and avoiding it creates safety hazards.
The situation at the Ayurveda College stop presents a clear case of poor urban planning meeting inadequate enforcement, with passenger safety paying the price. A coordinated solution involving traffic police, KSRTC, and the city's planning authorities is urgently needed to resolve this daily hazard on one of Thiruvananthapuram's key thoroughfares.
