Telangana Government Launches Skill Development Initiative for Transgender Persons
In a significant move towards social and economic inclusion, the Telangana government officially launched a dedicated skill development program for transgender persons on Saturday. This initiative is designed to promote sustainable livelihoods and foster self-reliance within the transgender community, marking a progressive step in the state's welfare policies.
Program Inauguration and Government Commitment
The program was inaugurated at the National Institute of Tourism and Hospitality Management (NITHM) in Gachibowli, Hyderabad. Welfare Minister Adluri Laxman Kumar presided over the event, emphasizing the government's unwavering commitment to ensuring dignity and equal opportunities for transgender individuals. He stated that this initiative builds upon earlier inclusion efforts, such as engaging transgender persons in traffic management and as security personnel in the Metro system.
Focus Areas and Employment Opportunities
The new skill development program will concentrate on three key sectors:
- Car Driving: Providing training for professional driving roles.
- Hotel Management: Offering skills for careers in the hospitality industry.
- Drone Piloting: Equipping participants with expertise in emerging drone technology.
Minister Kumar highlighted the growing scope of drone technology, noting its diverse applications in photography, agriculture, and event management, which are creating new livelihood opportunities. He expressed confidence that trainees would leverage these skills to build successful careers in these emerging sectors.
Program Details and Financial Allocation
A total of 91 transgender persons are set to benefit from this program. The government has allocated ₹17.72 lakh for training and related support, ensuring comprehensive skill development and employment facilitation. The minister reiterated that the focus extends beyond mere skill acquisition to actively promoting job opportunities and entrepreneurial ventures.
Inclusive Approach and Social Justice
Reiterating the government's inclusive approach, Minister Kumar emphasized that transgender persons are being recognized as equal stakeholders in society. He added, "True development is possible only through social justice and economic empowerment." This statement underscores the program's broader goal of integrating the transgender community into the mainstream economy and social fabric.
This initiative represents a forward-thinking effort by the Telangana government to address historical disparities and empower marginalized groups through targeted skill development and employment support.
