India's Largest Hydropower Project Achieves Key Milestone with Unit-4 Commissioning
In a landmark development for India's energy sector, the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project has officially commenced the wet commissioning of its fourth unit, signaling a major advancement in the nation's quest for self-reliance in clean power generation. Located along the border of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, this project represents the largest hydropower venture in the country.
Mechanical Spinning Success Marks Progress
The process began with the successful mechanical spinning of Unit-4, which has a capacity of 250 MW. This achievement underscores the project's steady progress despite facing numerous geographical and logistical challenges over the years. The Subansiri Lower Project is designed as an 8x250 MW run-of-the-river scheme, aiming to harness the region's hydro potential efficiently.

Marking the occasion, Bhupender Gupta, chairman and managing director of NHPC, emphasized the significance of this milestone. He stated, "This achievement is a testament to NHPC's engineering excellence and a powerful step toward India's clean, green, and self-reliant energy vision. Phased Approach for Future Units
With Unit-4 now in the commissioning phase, NHPC plans to adopt a phased approach to bring the remaining units online. This strategic method ensures systematic progress and minimizes operational disruptions. Once fully operational, the project is expected to generate approximately 7,421 million units of electricity annually, significantly boosting India's renewable energy capacity.
