Goa's Sonsoddo Waste Treatment Plant Nears Completion at 95%
Urban Development Minister Vishwajit Rane has confirmed that the advanced waste treatment plant at Sonsoddo in Margao is now 95% complete, with only minor finishing work and operational trials remaining before full commissioning. The announcement came during a recent assembly session in response to a question from Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco, highlighting the project's progress amid ongoing delays.
Project Details and Contractual Timeline
The contractual deadline for commissioning the plant was set for December 2, 2025, as per the agreement signed between the Margao Municipal Council (MMC), the Goa Energy Development Agency (GEDA), and Pune-based GD Environmental Pvt Ltd. This tripartite agreement, finalized on November 5, 2025, covers the supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of a 10-tonne-per-day (TPD) gasification-based waste disposal system.
Gasification Technology Implementation
The plant utilizes innovative gasification technology to convert municipal waste into fly ash, which is then repurposed for brick manufacturing. This environmentally friendly approach aims to reduce landfill dependency and promote sustainable waste management practices in the region.
Missed Inauguration and Regulatory Hurdles
Originally scheduled for inauguration on January 26, the plant missed its target date due to delays in obtaining mandatory regulatory consent from the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB). Officials cited these regulatory approvals as the primary cause for the postponement, emphasizing the need for compliance with environmental standards before operational commencement.
Minister Rane assured the assembly that the remaining work involves finalizing minor technical aspects and conducting comprehensive trials to ensure the plant functions efficiently and safely. The project represents a significant step in Goa's urban development initiatives, addressing waste management challenges through modern technological solutions.
The completion of the Sonsoddo plant is expected to enhance Margao's waste processing capacity, contributing to cleaner urban environments and supporting the state's sustainability goals. As trials proceed, local authorities remain focused on meeting regulatory requirements and preparing for the plant's official launch in the coming months.
