The Rohtak Municipal Corporation has intensified its crackdown on bulk waste generators who fail to comply with solid waste management rules. The civic body is imposing fines and penalties on hotels, restaurants, marriage palaces, and other commercial establishments that do not segregate waste at source or fail to hand over waste to authorized collectors.
Increased Inspections and Penalties
Municipal Commissioner Dr. Sanjeev Verma stated that teams have been formed to conduct surprise inspections at bulk waste generation sites. These teams will check whether establishments are adhering to the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016. Non-compliant entities will face a fine of Rs 5,000 for the first offense and Rs 10,000 for subsequent violations. Repeat offenders may also face legal action under the Environment Protection Act.
Focus on Segregation and Processing
The municipal corporation is emphasizing the importance of waste segregation at source. Bulk generators are required to separate waste into biodegradable, non-biodegradable, and hazardous categories. Biodegradable waste must be processed on-site or handed over to the corporation's composting facility. Non-biodegradable waste should be stored separately and given to recyclers or the municipal collection system.
Dr. Verma warned that failure to comply would result in strict action. He also urged residents to cooperate and follow waste management norms to keep the city clean. The civic body has set up a helpline for citizens to report violations.
Impact on Waste Management
This step is expected to significantly improve waste management in Rohtak, as bulk generators contribute a large portion of the city's waste. By enforcing rules, the corporation aims to reduce the burden on landfills and promote recycling and composting. The initiative aligns with the Swachh Bharat Mission's goals of achieving cleaner cities.
