Ranchi Braces for Extended Power Disruptions for Infrastructure Modernization

Residents of Ranchi, who have already been grappling with unscheduled power interruptions in recent days, must now prepare for a more structured period of electricity disruptions. The Jharkhand Bijli Vitaran Nigam Ltd (JBVNL) has officially announced that scheduled power outages will be implemented across the city for the next three to four months. These planned interruptions, which will last between two to three hours each, are part of a comprehensive infrastructure upgrade initiative under the revamped distribution sector scheme (RDSS).

Technical Work Aimed at Loss Reduction and Safety

According to JBVNL officials, the primary goal of the RDSS project is to significantly reduce technical and commercial losses in the power distribution network. This ambitious undertaking involves several critical technical enhancements designed to modernize the city's electrical infrastructure. Key components of the work include converting existing low tension (LT) bare wires into insulated cables, augmenting existing transformers, and installing new transformers where necessary.

Manmohan Kumar, General Manager of JBVNL for the Ranchi supply area board, elaborated on the technical scope: "The project encompasses the segregation of 11kv lines, feeder bifurcation, and the establishment of a modern voltage distribution system infrastructure. These improvements are essential for ensuring better load distribution across the network where it is most needed."

Phase-Wise Implementation with Safety as Priority

The infrastructure work will be executed in a carefully planned, phase-wise manner across different areas of Ranchi. Power supply will be temporarily suspended in specific localities as work progresses, with restoration occurring as soon as the tasks in each area are completed. Kumar emphasized that these scheduled cuts are being implemented primarily from a safety perspective to prevent any potential accidents during the installation and upgrade processes.

"The work will be executed in a phase-wise manner, and power supply will be restored as soon as the tasks in a particular area are completed. These cuts are being implemented primarily from a safety standpoint to avoid any potential accidents during the installation," he reiterated.

Challenges in Narrow Lanes Slowing Progress

In an appeal to Ranchi residents, the General Manager requested cooperation in providing right-of-way to electricity department vehicles. He highlighted a significant logistical challenge that is affecting the pace of the upgrade work. While trolley-mounted cranes could dramatically accelerate the installation process, the narrowness of many lanes throughout the city prevents the entry of these large utility vehicles.

"We could complete the work much more rapidly by utilizing trolley-mounted cranes, but the narrowness of many lanes prevents the entry of large utility vehicles. Hence, the work is being carried out manually in those spots, which naturally takes more time," Kumar explained.

This manual approach in constrained areas means that residents in neighborhoods with narrow access roads may experience slightly longer disruption periods compared to areas where mechanical equipment can be deployed efficiently.

Long-Term Benefits for Ranchi's Power Infrastructure

Despite the temporary inconvenience, JBVNL officials stress that the infrastructure upgrades will deliver substantial long-term benefits to Ranchi's power distribution system. The conversion to insulated cables is expected to reduce technical losses significantly, while the transformer augmentation and new installations will enhance capacity and reliability. The modern voltage distribution system infrastructure will provide more stable electricity supply and better accommodate future demand growth.

The scheduled outages represent a necessary step in transforming Ranchi's power distribution network into a more efficient, reliable, and safe system that can better serve the city's residents and businesses in the years to come.
