Ranchi Municipal Board Unveils Major Urban Safety and Infrastructure Overhaul
In a landmark decision aimed at enhancing urban safety and addressing critical civic issues, the newly elected municipal body in Ranchi has announced a sweeping set of measures. The initiatives were finalized during an intensive eleven-hour inaugural board meeting that concluded late on Thursday night.
CCTV Surveillance and Street Lighting Initiative
Mayor Roshni Khalkho, speaking to the press on Friday, detailed the board's primary focus on bolstering security. "All ward councillors have been instructed to identify and list sensitive areas within their wards where crime risks are elevated," Khalkho stated. Once these lists are submitted, CCTV cameras will be strategically installed at these high-risk points to monitor and deter criminal activities. Additionally, each ward councillor will be tasked with ensuring the installation of 50 new street lights, a move designed to illuminate all wards comprehensively and further enhance public safety during nighttime hours.
Addressing Water Shortages and Drainage Maintenance
The meeting also tackled pressing concerns related to water scarcity and drainage system upkeep. To combat anticipated summer shortages, the board has decided to increase the number of water tankers and mandate that every councillor oversee five deep borings in their respective wards. "This proactive approach aims to ensure a reliable water supply throughout the hotter months," Khalkho explained. In preparation for the upcoming monsoon season, the board has resolved to identify locations prone to waterlogging and deploy excavators to clear major drains. For areas inaccessible to machinery, manual labor will be utilized, with extra manpower being hired to facilitate this critical maintenance work.
Cleanliness and Garbage Collection Reforms
Several councillors raised grievances regarding inadequate cleanliness and inefficient garbage collection across the city. In response, the board has decided to convene a meeting with the agency responsible for these services. A stern warning has been issued: the contract will be terminated if performance does not show immediate and significant improvement. This step underscores the board's commitment to maintaining a cleaner urban environment for all residents.
Fee Hikes and Regulatory Adjustments
The board approved a hike in the fees collected by the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) for the removal of discarded building materials. Previously set at Rs 300, the fee has been increased to Rs 600, a compromise from a proposed Rs 850, to better align with the actual costs of collection and disposal. "Individuals who fail to arrange for the removal of construction debris will face fines from the RMC," Khalkho added, emphasizing the need for compliance.
Furthermore, a regulatory change was approved to simplify the registration process for lodges and hostels. Previously, many owners were unable to register due to a lack of approved building plans. The new policy will issue licenses based on holding tax, water usage, and garbage disposal taxes. "This adjustment will enable small business owners to operate legally while allowing us to monitor the safety of occupants in these establishments," Khalkho noted, highlighting the dual benefits of economic facilitation and enhanced safety oversight.
