PWD Launches Major Road Infrastructure Overhaul in Sangam Vihar
In a significant move to enhance urban mobility, the Public Works Department (PWD) of Delhi is intensifying its focus on road infrastructure improvements in Sangam Vihar. This initiative not only involves strengthening existing road networks but also includes ambitious plans for a new corridor, reflecting a comprehensive strategy to boost connectivity and safety in one of south Delhi's most densely populated and bustling neighborhoods.
Comprehensive Road Repair and Safety Upgrades Underway
As part of this drive, the PWD has identified several critical repair and strengthening projects under the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF), with Sangam Vihar designated as a priority zone. The allocated budget of Rs 3.47 crore is dedicated to enhancing road durability and implementing advanced safety measures. Key components of the work include the installation of high-visibility glow studs, retro-reflective thermoplastic markings, and robust crash barriers. These features are specifically designed to improve night-time visibility and significantly reduce the risk of accidents, ensuring safer travel for residents and commuters alike.
All construction activities will adhere strictly to the specifications set by the Indian Roads Congress (IRC) and PWD standards. This involves thorough cleaning and preparation of road surfaces before any new installations, guaranteeing long-lasting and effective infrastructure upgrades.
Proposal for a New Corridor to Enhance Connectivity
Beyond the immediate repairs, the department has kickstarted a proposal to construct a new road linking the Shooting Range T-Point to the Government Senior Secondary School in J Block. To assess the feasibility and design requirements of this project, a detailed survey and the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be conducted. This step is crucial for planning a corridor that meets the evolving needs of the community.
Sangam Vihar serves as a vital last-mile connector to key areas such as Mehrauli, Saket, and Tughlakabad. However, its narrow roads, mixed land use patterns, and heavy commuter traffic often lead to congestion and safety hazards. Even minor disruptions can quickly escalate, affecting arterial corridors across the region. Therefore, these infrastructure upgrades are essential for alleviating traffic bottlenecks and enhancing overall safety.
Strategic Planning and Community Engagement
The preparatory phase will commence with a reconnaissance survey, supported by photographic documentation, to identify on-ground challenges and existing issues. Following this, topographical and tree-count surveys will be carried out to gather comprehensive data. Based on these findings, the PWD will develop an integrated development plan for the corridor. This plan will detail the layout of carriageways, footpaths, medians, verge areas, and utility zones, aiming to facilitate smoother traffic flow and safer pedestrian movement.
Junction design and road safety will be central to this exercise. Engineers will meticulously assess junction geometry, pinpoint bottlenecks and conflict points, and examine pedestrian safety concerns. Proposed improvements may include better channelisation, modified turning radii, designated pedestrian crossings, and refuge islands. All designs will align with the guidelines of the IRC and the Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning and Engineering) Centre (UTTIPEC), ensuring modern and efficient infrastructure.
Detailed drawings, including plans, longitudinal profiles, and cross-sections, will be prepared alongside a robust implementation strategy. The proposals will be presented to stakeholders, with their feedback incorporated before final submission, fostering a collaborative approach to urban development.
