Pune Irrigation Department Urges 15% Water Cut Amid El Niño Concerns
Pune Water Cut: 15% Reduction Urged for El Niño Preparedness

Pune Authorities Directed to Slash Water Usage by 15% Ahead of Monsoon

The irrigation department in Pune has issued a critical directive to major water supply bodies, including the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), and the Wagholi water supply scheme. The order mandates a 15% reduction in daily water consumption, citing heightened concerns over the El Niño phenomenon and the likelihood of deficit rainfall during the upcoming monsoon season.

Extending Water Reserves to Mitigate Summer Shortages

In an urgent alert to authorities, the department emphasized the necessity to stretch existing water stocks until the end of August, rather than the previously targeted date of July 31. Officials stressed that maintaining adequate reserves in dams is crucial, even after the initial arrival of rain, to prevent potential crises later in the summer.

Statewide Mandate for Cautious Water Management

This directive follows recent discussions in the state assembly regarding the impact of El Niño on water security. In response to the state government's mandate for prudent water management, the irrigation department has sent similar notices to all involved entities, reinforcing the call for a 15% cut in usage.

Current Water Storage and Climate Forecast Warnings

Currently, four dams supplying drinking water to Pune hold approximately 13.2 TMC (45% capacity), which is nearly one TMC more than last year's stock of 12 TMC. However, irrigation officials have issued a stern warning: despite this surplus, judicious use is mandatory given the adverse climate forecast. At present, these dams continue to supply water to both urban areas and rural regions for summer crops.

Immediate Measures and Preemptive Steps

An official from the irrigation department stated, "We expect the PMC to implement immediate measures to curtail usage. While we have not yet initiated a formal supply cut from dams, the civic body must introduce changes in its distribution system to achieve a 15% reduction. These preemptive steps are essential to avoid a crisis toward the end of summer."

PMC's Response and Upcoming Consultations

The PMC's water supply department has confirmed receipt of the letter and is preparing for a consultation. Nandkishor Jagtap, head of the PMC's water supply department, said, "A meeting will be held in the next two days with the irrigation department to discuss the feasibility of these cuts and other related issues. The administration will decide on the further course of action following the discussion."

This proactive approach aims to safeguard water resources and ensure sustainable management in the face of unpredictable weather patterns, highlighting the importance of community and governmental cooperation in addressing environmental challenges.
