Pune Municipal Corporation Finalizes 34 Parking Sites Near Metro Stations

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has officially finalized 34 strategic locations near Metro stations for dedicated parking facilities, with construction work already initiated at four of these sites. This significant development is part of a broader effort to enhance public transport infrastructure and address the critical issue of last-mile connectivity in the city.

Joint Survey and Strategic Planning

A collaborative committee comprising officials from the PMC and the Metro authority conducted an extensive survey to identify viable sites for parking. Following this thorough assessment, the 34 locations were selected, encompassing all three Metro lines, including the upcoming Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar route. Dinkar Gojare, the chief engineer of PMC's project department, emphasized that these sites are strategically positioned to serve commuters across the expanding Metro network.

Current and Future Parking Infrastructure

As of March 2026, Pune Metro currently provides official pay-and-park services at eight key stations along Line 1 (Purple Line) and Line 2 (Aqua Line). The newly approved parking spaces for Line 3, which covers the Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar corridor, are expected to significantly augment these existing facilities. Sanjay Shitole of Pune City Eye, a prominent citizens' group, highlighted the importance of such initiatives, stating that public parking is a crucial component for the success of Metro services in Pune, urging the administration to continue efforts in improving allied transport facilities.

Addressing Last-Mile Connectivity Challenges

Urban planners and activists have long stressed that inadequate last-mile connectivity is a major barrier to promoting public transport usage. They argue that the civic administration's inability to provide seamless connectivity has led to an increased reliance on private vehicles, exacerbating traffic congestion and environmental concerns. The new parking sites are seen as a vital step towards mitigating these issues by offering convenient options for Metro users.

Feasibility Study for New Metro Line

In a related development, the PMC has formally requested Maha Metro to conduct a feasibility study for a proposed Metro line connecting Wakad, Katraj, and Shewalewadi. This initiative follows suggestions from elected representatives to explore the possibility of including this route in the comprehensive mobility plan (CMP). The study aims to assess the viability of this new line, which could further expand the city's public transport network and improve connectivity in these areas.

The PMC's proactive measures in finalizing parking sites and exploring new Metro routes reflect a concerted effort to enhance urban mobility and reduce dependency on private vehicles. As work progresses on the four initial parking locations, commuters can look forward to improved access and convenience, potentially transforming Pune's public transport landscape in the coming years.
