Prayagraj's New 3.1km Cable-Stayed Bridge to Ease Traffic, Yamuna Bridge Gets Lights
Prayagraj's New 3.1km Cable-Stayed Bridge to Ease Traffic

Major Infrastructure Boost for Prayagraj with New Ganga Bridge and Yamuna Bridge Lighting

In a significant infrastructure advancement for Prayagraj, construction is underway on a substantial six-lane bridge spanning the Ganga River. This development forms a crucial component of the Phase-II Ring Road initiative, designed to alleviate urban congestion and enhance regional connectivity.

Engineering Marvel: A 3,100-Metre Bridge with Extensive Cable-Stayed Design

The bridge, stretching an impressive 3,100 metres in total length, will feature a prominent 2,100-metre cable-stayed section. This engineering feat is poised to become one of the most notable structures in the area, connecting Nibi Kala and Chhatnag to Saraswati Hi-Tech City in Naini.

The cable-stayed portion will incorporate approximately 14 cable segments, installed at intervals of 150 metres. This design is notably more extensive than the cable configuration used in the Malak Harhar to Stanley Road stretch, where cables span only 800 metres with wider spacing. Officials highlight that this approach will significantly bolster the bridge's structural integrity while also enhancing its visual appeal.

Construction Progress and Timeline

The bridge is being erected on 80 pillars, with nearly 90% of the pillar work already completed. Authorities anticipate finishing the remaining pillar construction by May. Subsequently, work on placing segments and developing the superstructure is scheduled to commence from June.

To support this next phase, segment casting is currently in progress near Saraswati Hi-Tech City. Officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) indicate that cable installation is likely to begin from July.

Objectives and Expected Benefits

The Ring Road project in Prayagraj aims to decongest city traffic by redirecting heavy vehicles away from the urban core and improving connectivity between the trans-Ganga and trans-Yamuna regions. Once operational, the new bridge is projected to substantially reduce travel time and alleviate pressure on existing routes, particularly during peak hours and major events like the Magh Mela and Maha Kumbh.

Additional Development: Permanent Lighting for Yamuna Bridge

In a parallel development to improve commuter safety, the city's historic 161-year-old Yamuna bridge will soon be equipped with permanent lighting. The Prayagraj municipal corporation has secured approval from railway authorities and has successfully conducted trial installations.

Currently, vehicles traverse the bridge in near darkness after sunset, raising safety concerns. The installation of lights will provide improved visibility and safer movement for commuters. The civic body has initiated the tender process, and work on installing the permanent lights is expected to start shortly.

This dual infrastructure enhancement underscores Prayagraj's commitment to modernizing its transport network, ensuring both efficiency and safety for residents and visitors alike.
