Odisha Government to Introduce Online Slot Booking for Puri's Jagannath Temple

Devotees visiting the revered Jagannath Temple in Puri may soon experience a significant reduction in waiting times, as the Odisha government is planning to implement an innovative online slot booking system. This initiative aims to streamline crowd management and enhance the overall darshan experience for pilgrims.

Minister Announces New Crowd Management Measures

Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan revealed on Wednesday that the state government is actively working on the modalities for a darshan slot booking facility. "We are working on the modalities for the darshan slot booking facility. Discussions have already been held with the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration, and the matter will be placed before the temple managing committee shortly," stated Harichandan.

Under the proposed system, devotees will be able to reserve their darshan slots in advance through an online platform and arrive at the temple at their designated time. They will be accommodated in a separate holding area before being granted entry into the sanctum sanctorum.

Dual System Approach and Infrastructure Upgrades

The minister emphasized that the traditional queue system will continue to operate alongside the new online facility, which will be introduced on an experimental basis initially. "The initiative aims to reduce overcrowding, regulate visitor flow, and ensure a more organized and spiritually fulfilling darshan," Harichandan explained.

In addition to the booking system, the government is moving forward with plans to revamp the existing queue infrastructure:

  • Six elevated ramps will be installed in the Nata Mandap and Jagamohan areas
  • Each ramp measures 16 feet long and 4 feet wide
  • The design will raise devotees' eye level for clearer glimpses of the deities
  • Tenders have been floated for installing an air-conditioning system at Nata Mandap

Surge in Visitors Following Temple Door Reopening

The 12th-century shrine has witnessed a substantial increase in visitors since the BJP government reopened all four temple doors on June 13, 2024. This reopening occurred just one day after Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi took oath, fulfilling a key pre-poll promise of the BJP. Three doors had remained closed since 2020, causing significant inconvenience to devotees.

On normal days, the temple typically receives between 50,000 to 60,000 visitors, but this number often exceeds 100,000 on weekends, creating considerable crowd-control challenges for both devotees and police authorities.

Comprehensive Approach to Devotee Management

"To manage the rush, the government is adopting multiple measures. We are also working to facilitate smooth darshan for local residents of Puri, saints and seers, as well as elderly and physically-challenged devotees," Harichandan added, highlighting the comprehensive nature of the crowd management strategy.

The combination of technological solutions through online booking and physical infrastructure improvements represents a modern approach to managing one of India's most visited pilgrimage sites while preserving its spiritual significance and accessibility for all devotees.
