In the wake of a heartbreaking incident that claimed the life of a young software engineer, the Noida Authority has initiated a series of urgent measures aimed at enhancing public safety across the city. The tragic drowning of 27-year-old Yuvraj Mehta in a water-filled construction pit in Sector 150 has prompted authorities to take decisive action to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Identification and Securing of Hazardous Locations
Officials have confirmed that the Noida Authority has embarked on a mission to identify gradient slopes that pose significant risks to drivers. These dangerous inclines are being marked for immediate intervention. The authority is erecting signage borders and installing crash barriers around these vulnerable points to mitigate potential accidents.
Chief Executive Officer Krishna Karunesh revealed that seventeen gradient slopes have been identified within the authority's jurisdiction. The work to secure these hazardous spots is expected to be completed by February 10. This proactive approach underscores the administration's commitment to addressing infrastructure flaws that compromise citizen safety.
Strict Timelines for Builders and Developers
In a significant move, the Noida Authority has issued notices to developers, mandating them to address all public safety concerns at under-construction sites by February 28. CEO Karunesh emphasized that failure to comply within the stipulated timeframe will result in the authority undertaking the necessary work itself and recovering the costs from the responsible builders.
This stringent directive aims to hold construction companies accountable for maintaining safe environments around their projects. The measure is a direct response to the public outrage following the engineer's death, with residents having previously raised alarms about the hazardous construction site.
Comprehensive Road Repair and Traffic Management
The safety drive extends beyond construction sites to encompass the city's road network. Authorities have identified sixty-five vulnerable points across Noida, with the majority located in the still-developing administrative areas of Work Circles 6 to 10. Installation of signboards and crash barriers at these locations has already commenced.
Following a thorough review of road conditions, the authority has initiated repairs on several stretches that have not undergone blacktop work or asphalt paving in the last four to five years. These dilapidated sections are being addressed to ensure smoother and safer travel for commuters.
Additionally, the Civil Department has been instructed to coordinate with other departments and invite tenders within a month to resolve persistent traffic bottlenecks. This holistic approach to traffic management is expected to significantly reduce accident risks.
Background of the Tragic Incident
The catalyst for these safety measures was the tragic death of software engineer Yuvraj Mehta, who drowned in a deep pit on the intervening night of January 16 and January 17. Despite screaming for help for approximately two hours, rescue efforts by police and fire services personnel were hampered by delayed equipment and specialist arrival.
The autopsy report confirmed that Mehta died due to asphyxia followed by cardiac arrest, with his nose blocked by mud and water, and water found in his chest and lungs. The incident led to the filing of an FIR at the Knowledge Park Police Station against two real estate companies and several shareholders, resulting in the arrest of three builders.
In the aftermath, the Uttar Pradesh government removed the then Noida CEO, M. Lokesh, and established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) committee to probe the matter. Although the investigation has been completed, the report has not yet been made public, leaving many questions unanswered about systemic safety lapses.
