Nagpur Municipal Corporation Issues Urgent Public Notice for Birth Registration Updates
The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has released an important public notice, strongly urging all citizens to immediately add their children's names to existing birth registrations before the extended deadline of April 27, 2026. This critical announcement comes as the civic body seeks to streamline birth records and ensure proper documentation for all residents.
Special Relaxation Granted for Late Registrations
According to Section 14 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, and Rule 10 of the Maharashtra Registration of Births and Deaths Rules, 2000, a child's name can typically be added to the birth register only within 15 years from the date of birth. However, many citizens continued to approach the municipal corporation even after this 15-year limit, facing significant difficulties as the existing rules did not permit such additions.
Following a directive from the central government in 2021, a special relaxation of five years was granted to allow inclusion of names even after the standard 15-year limit. The Maharashtra government later issued an official notification on April 28, 2021, extending the deadline for such cases up to April 27, 2026, providing citizens with additional time to complete this important documentation process.
Required Documentation and Important Clarifications
NMC officials have specifically appealed to citizens whose birth records already exist but whose names have not been entered to complete the registration process before the deadline, even if they are above 15 years of age. Applicants will need to submit relevant supporting documents, including school leaving certificates, SSC mark sheets, or other valid proof of identity and age.
Officials have emphasized that the date of birth in submitted documents must precisely match the date recorded in the original birth register. This requirement is crucial for maintaining accurate records and preventing discrepancies in official documentation.
The municipal corporation has also clarified that once a name has already been registered in the birth records, it cannot be completely changed under the provisions of the Act. This underscores the importance of ensuring accuracy during the initial registration process.
Changes in Certificate Issuance Procedures
In a related development, birth and death certificates for cases reported in government hospitals such as Mayo Hospital, Medical College Hospital, and Daga Hospital since July 2023 will now be issued only from the respective hospitals themselves, rather than through the municipal corporation's central office. This decentralization aims to improve efficiency and reduce processing times for certificate issuance.
Warning Against Fraudulent Practices
The Nagpur Municipal Corporation has issued a stern warning to citizens, advising them not to approach agents or middlemen for birth, death, or marriage registration work. The department has made it clear that it will not be responsible in cases of fraud or fake certificates obtained through unauthorized channels. Citizens are encouraged to deal directly with official municipal offices to ensure the legitimacy of their documentation.
This comprehensive notice from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation represents a significant effort to improve civic record-keeping and ensure that all citizens have proper documentation for important life events. With the extended deadline approaching, officials are encouraging prompt action to avoid last-minute complications.
