NHAI Issues Directive for FASTag Vehicle Registration Number Validation
The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has issued a critical directive requiring all FASTag issuer banks to immediately validate vehicle registration numbers (VRNs) linked to FASTags. According to a report by the Economic Times, banks must also blacklist any FASTags found to be associated with incorrect or invalid details. This decisive move is designed to strengthen the accuracy and reliability of India's electronic toll collection (ETC) system, addressing long-standing issues that could undermine enforcement and revenue collection.
Addressing Discrepancies in Vehicle Identification
The directive was prompted by numerous complaints highlighting that VRNs captured by FASTag readers often did not match the actual registration numbers displayed on vehicle plates. NHAI emphasized that such discrepancies pose a significant risk, potentially weakening enforcement mechanisms and leading to evasion of government revenue. In its official statement, the authority warned that these mismatches could also attract penal provisions under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, underscoring the legal and financial implications of inaccurate data.
Legacy Issues with Older FASTags and VAHAN Integration
NHAI further identified that a considerable number of these mismatches are linked to FASTags issued before the integration with the VAHAN database, India's centralized vehicle registration system. Prior to this integration, validation mechanisms relied heavily on manual processes, which resulted in inconsistencies and errors in vehicle identification records. The authority stressed that correct VRN mapping is now more critical than ever, especially as India progresses toward implementing multi-lane free flow (MLFF) tolling systems.
Importance for Future Tolling Systems and Enforcement
With India working on rolling out MLFF tolling, accurate vehicle identification data becomes paramount. Under MLFF, enforcement actions, such as issuing electronic notices (e-Notices) to non-compliant vehicles, will depend entirely on verified and correct VRN information. NHAI's directive aims to ensure that the ETC system is robust and ready for this advanced tolling infrastructure, preventing potential revenue losses and enhancing overall efficiency on national highways.
This proactive step by NHAI highlights a broader effort to modernize India's transportation networks and enforce compliance through technological advancements.
