With the Simhastha Kumbh Mela in Nashik and Trimbakeshwar projected to draw over 12 crore devotees in 2027, local authorities are implementing a comprehensive telecom strategy to avert communication failures. This initiative is critical as peak bathing days, particularly the three Amrit Snan days, could see daily footfall surge to 2.25 crore, placing immense strain on existing networks.
Multi-Layered 5G Grid to Ensure Connectivity
The proposed telecom blueprint centers on a large-scale deployment of a 5G grid across the Kumbh region. This advanced infrastructure will be enhanced with network slicing technology, which prioritizes emergency, security, and administrative communications during periods of extreme congestion. Officials emphasize that this design aims to maintain essential communication systems even if public mobile networks become overloaded, ensuring seamless coordination for critical services.
Temporary Mobile Infrastructure for High-Density Areas
To manage sudden spikes in voice and data traffic, temporary high-capacity mobile units, such as Cells on Wheels, will be strategically positioned at key locations. These include ghats, major arterial roads, holding areas, and other congregation points. These mobile units are expected to play a pivotal role during Shahi and Amrit Snan days, when crowd density peaks within short time windows, providing reliable connectivity to prevent disruptions.
Dedicated Networks for Emergency Services
A cornerstone of the plan is the establishment of dedicated, mission-critical communication networks exclusively for police, disaster response agencies, and medical services. Officials highlight that these exclusive networks are vital to ensure uninterrupted coordination during emergencies, such as stampedes or medical crises, where reliance on conventional public networks could pose significant risks. Robust Backend and Fail-Safe Measures
To safeguard against backend failures, authorities are focusing on strengthening fibre and IP-based backhaul connectivity across the Kumbh region. Additionally, satellite-based connectivity has been proposed as a final fail-safe mechanism. This measure is intended to maintain communication in scenarios involving fibre damage, power outages, or natural disruptions, ensuring that connectivity remains resilient under all circumstances.
